I'm 23 and I don't think I've gotten my shit together at all. I'm humble and mature compared to most people my age and older.

I mean, yeah I've got a car(that I paid for) and an Associates' degree(I paid for college) that I can't do much with obvsly.

I've got a few years of sales experience. But, that's about it.

I think by the time I get my bachelor's degree(1.5-2 years), meet new people to talk to, and see their pov on life, I'll start getting my shit together.

I don't really know what "getting your shit together" is? Is it getting a good-paying job? Being married to shit whoever you wanna marry Having a nice house in a nice neighborhood with a nice green lawn? Owning foreign cars? Maintaining health and your happiness?

What does getting your shit together really mean?

Haha, yeah, what he said. lol

Notice in my original post in this thread I said "I started getting my shit together at age 20." That's because it's always a work in progress. You are never finished getting your sh*t together.

Haha, that's right. He'll realize that. We get sh*t when we don't get our sh*t together too. Another joy of life.

Idk, I’m not big on the drinking and whatever things. I’m Humble I guess.

They weren’t that old compared to my age. I was the youngest worker there.

Everyone else was 25+

I dunno, I have a few drinks every Friday night. I don't go out driving or anything. A person can drink and still be responsible. I know that's not what you're talking about. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. Sounds like you're doing ok so just keep doing what you're doing.

Thanks, man! Appreciate it.

I think I’ll be farther down the “getting my shit together” road once I get my bachelor's degree and buy a house etc.

I think that having your sh1t together is just when you feel content with your life. So it'll vary from person to person, depending on what you prioritise or value etc.

I always had odd jobs to get money from an early age. At 15, my parents got divorced and I got extra jobs to help my Mom as much as I could. I've been full on ever since taking care of myself and my family.

I think the word content summarizes having your sh*t together perfectly. Maybe that is why I don't feel like I have it figured out yet, there is just so much more that I want (and will) to accomplish. One step at a time!

I feel like I really didn't get my shit together until the day I told my wife she didn't have to work anymore. Honestly, it took a long time. I was in my late 30's. Up until then I felt like I was just winging it. When the shit hit the fan with the housing bubble, I knew it was time for adult decisions and planning. Started planning how we were going to dump our condo we were upside down on, get a new house for cheap and start over. Sold my car which was too expensive and flashy for my income and "downgraded" to a 328i, which was a great car btw. Started really looking into retirement, investments etc.

This thread is really interesting, not least of all for the fact that it spotlights how "having your shit together" is hugely a matter of perspective.

As a kid I believed all grownups had their shit together, that's why they're grown ups. That slowly shifted to a realization that grownups are just people who are older, but many are still winging it or trying their best, even the ones that seem the most put together to me.

I really liked this post tbh.

Never thought of it that way, but it's a really good perspective to have (and it also made me realize a part of me has changed for the worst over the years without realizing it)

In addition, even if YOU think you have your shit together, there's a good chance that there are others that don't think you do.

Like you guys said, it all depends on perspective.

That is really what happened to me at 18.

Mom divorced step dad, and moved way up north in BC. I could go with them if I wanted but had no interest. Never got on with step dad, so........on my own it was. I surfed couches of friends for a few weeks, slept in my car for 4 months over the summer, and got busy living from there.

I think it is hard to try and characterize a point in time at which you get your sh*t together.

For me, I can see that you can be dialed in on many aspects of your life but still need development/help/work on other aspects. For example:

- you may be doing really well professionally, but need work on your relationships (e.g., as a spouse, parent, friend, etc.)
- you may be successful financially (getting income), but need work on your spending and cash management (saving/planning)
- you may be great at taking care of others around you (e.g., friends, spouse, ect.), but have a hard time taking care of yourself

I think one of the biggest aspects of getting your sh*t together is about being able to see why people see the world the way they do and why they act the way they do -- this includes yourself and especially the people you care about. If you can do this well, you can motivate and forgive/excuse many things that end up leading to undesirable outcomes.
