spent a couple hours in Rocky Mountain National Park with my dad and his wife.

founds some wildlife. sadly, there's the slightest amount of camera shake showing in the picture

What settings/lens were you shooting with that caused the blur?

it's mostly because the deer was actually close, and the slight camera shake giving me that blur.

but it was:
7D
100 ISO
100-400mm F4-5.6
shot at 400mm
F5.6
1/200th

last one for tonight.

Elk on way home from Rocky Mountain

I was about 10' away from this thing, and it wouldn't lift it's head for anything. It was in eating mode. So sadly this is the best i could do to get it's rack.

400mm and only 1/200 shutter? Does that lens have IS?

yes it does. it's not as good as the IS in the 70-200 series lenses. It's one generation before.

I also suck at holding cameras, so that may have added a little movement. And slightly over excited at seeing wildlife.

kinda realized what was going on a little too late, then swiftly switched to 400ISO. and then a short time later, up to 800

Still, the shake would have slipped by if you hadn't mentioned it. It's not noticeable. Very nice shots. At least you didn't have to sit in a blind for hours like Dave sometimes does.

yeah, definitely got lucky today.

I think the shake shows up mostly in the bokeh on the right side, looks like heat waves. But the antlers are showing it ever so slightly too.

We went all the way into the park, checked all the spots where the elk are known to be, saw nothing. Wandered around a little, then got back in the car. On the way out we saw probably 8 deer. Maybe more.

and then after we left the park, we came across the Elk at the side of the road... literally... I have some pictures of that elk with a gas station behind it. People were literally 10' from them (including me)

As for the bird, we actually went to a place in town where they house crippled raptors. So i have a bunch of other hawk pictures and that buzzard.

overall, lots of wildlife. And Colorado, it has lots of cute girls too!!! sadly, hard to point such a big camera at them without them noticing

That's just weird.

IMO the blur is noticeable, but at least you have other shots from the day.

Nice deer and Elk shots anyway regardless of any shake that was in the photo.

But then again is sitting in a 6speed M3 coupe(?) so bad with heated (?) leather sport seats?

I think that he was talking about the bokeh when he said "blur", but not sure.

Now you see why I shoot so much wildlife. All that stuff is five-minutes from my house.

Great shots.

Dave

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how they turned out for the most part.

Thanks, and no doubt, it's a great "back yard" to play in. I'm looking forward to my next visit, but the dunes will be high on my priority list.

What area are you in?

lol, that's kinda brutal. But you've been doing a great job capturing what it has to offer!

I'm in Davenport Iowa right now, and i'm glad i got the worst of the drive out of the way now. From here to Chicago is pretty hilly compared to what i just did for 12 hours today pretty boring but neat at the same time. I swear, between Nebraska, Iowa, and Oklahoma, those are the worst drivers I've come across in my years of road tripping.

Ohio. Definitely Ohio. I hate driving across I-70. (No offense, Chewy.)
