G84 M3 ICE model to get 48-volt mild-hybrid inline-six engine, not PHEV (per Häcker)
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com BMW’s Next ICE M3 Is A Mild Hybrid, Not A PHEV Like The Heavyweight M5 BMW will offer the M3 with a 48-volt, six-cylinder combustion engine from around 2028, alongside an M3 EV with a quad-motor powertrain Dirk Häcker, head of development at BMW M told Carscoops that the next M3’s heart will be a 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain and not a PHEV. Why No PHEV? Speaking at the launch of the G90 series M5 in Munich, Häcker, a BMW M veteran, and number two to CEO Frank van Meel, said there was no point in adding the extra weight of a PHEV system unless you were going to get the benefit of a usable electric range, which has practical benefits as well as massive tax ones in select markets. You Can Thank The Electric M3 for that But since BMW will also sell an EV version of the M3, it can afford to keep the combustion version lighter and purer. Both models will ride on the same Neue Klasse platform that debuts next year on the new iX3 SUV and will then be used for the new 3-Series, scheduled for launch in 2026. The M3 duo likely won’t arrive on the market until later, the electric version debuting first, in 2027, and the ICE car following. |

Oh no! There goes the resale value on my G80 M3C!
/s Interesting news. I wonder if they’ll use it to fill or boost some torque in the power band or mainly to keep emissions down. I also wonder how big the 48V system will be and the weight consequences. Who will they hire to orchestrate the fake sounds for the electric version? Hans for the iX and Metallica for the M cars? Also, my G80 hasn’t even been built yet 😆 Last edited by anakha; 10-19-2024 at 01:25 PM.. |

This is great news. Mild hybrid or e-turbo are the way to go for these performance cars. Anyone who is interested in driving in electric mode has many other options

All the M340i, M440i cars already have mild-hybrid. And have for a few years now. Nothing new here to really be concerned about.

I wonder if this means BMW is killing the manual transmission for the M3/4 models? I don't know if any hybrids come with a stick?
Would be pretty amazing to have a six speed hybrid setup and I would hope with BMW's resources, they would. Hell, look at the Z4 manual as proof that fun cars still exist. If they do decide to make the M3/4 ZF8 only, then the G87 & Z4 are the only last fun cars left in the lineup, yikes.

EV M3 is going to be very, very interesting.
If the M5 Touring is successful in the US, perhaps BMW will sell me an M3 EV Touring 🙌

I’m guessing the mild hybrid is all about regulations and not performance. I had a 24 X5M and really couldn’t tell the difference from the non hybrid. The full EV M3 should obviously win the straight line but unless they rewrite the laws of physics can’t imagine it will handle and track nearly as well.
No one likes change unless they initiate it themselves. But I do think we have so many great choices these days and more to come. Imagine 20 years ago. Even 10 years ago. If someone told me I would have 2 cars in my driveway that can take the family on a trip and both are around 3 seconds 0-60 I would have said they were crazy. Good times! I think this is a good direction they’re going in. They’ll have a full ev for those who prefer that tech and still retain a six cylinder mild hybrid for those who still want an ICE. Both will have weight increases but not as drastic as the new M5. No more annuals for a mild hybrid so that’s done with. Rwd only would be nice if they could retain it but I’m suspecting with that much power it makes sense to go awd at that point. If they add E-turbos similar to the new gts that would be awesome.

Until there is a clear future on what cars will be powered by, this is the correct way to proceed if you’re able to fund both projects which BMW can.
BMW for the most part has been on the right side of this transition to EV where Audi and Mercedes have pretty much faultered. There has to be an EV offering if only for the fact that BMW needs data to see what does and doesn’t work for an EV M car, for the rest of us, at least we’ll get another inline-6 M3/M4. |
