Interesting.
I do not say Audi has no history in sport. I know the Audi [S]port division and all the succes they had and have in Rally with the Audi S1 Quattro, in DTM with the A4, in LeMans with R8 and R15......but RS does not have the same meaning as M. Of course now it is changing with X5 M, X6 M and M Turbo. For me RS in Audi is just like R in VW, Cupra in Seat or RS in Skoda. I speek about badge, not anything else.

Why doesn't it make sense? I think the Vette is an ugly car. Never liked them, probably never will. It’s a great performer but to each his own. Not everybody has the same taste…don’t really care for looks of the GT-R either, that's not to say it isn't a great performace car as well.

Well everyone is different. I'm not a big vette fan either. The exterior look just doesn't do it for me. Gimme a Shelby instead.

If you are to be 100% honest, M is a badge invented to promote sales of their sportest verions of run of the mill cars, much like Audi's RS and Mercedes' AMG.

I just don't know where you are going with this comment, and even with your reply I still don't.

As someone with an M3 who's driver's seat was showing real sign of hard wear only 3 months from new I am at odds with that statement. I would give BMW the benefit of the doubt and say mine was an exception to the rule so let's say I rate each as good as each other in terms of build quality and durability.
But one thing I do know is that bodywork wise they, meaning Audi are about the best for resisting rust, something I can't say either BMW or Mercedes can claim.

Yes, now M is like AMG and RS, a sport-luxury brand. But before it was not. I do not think it promoted the sales of the M635i and M535i, M3 (E30) and M5 (E34). The first that had the letter M was the M1. M stands for Motorsport, even if now it is just M GmbH. But there still is BMW Motorsport (www.bmw-motorsport.com). In Audi is called Audi Sport or Motorsport aswell and I do not see RennSport (RS) what is purely marketing to rival M and AMG or eventual GTA by Alfa.

domobrown,

You are a funny bloke, currently driving an extremely powerful rwd car in a country which winters are ill suited to the car and changing location and country which probably never get harsh winters and now decide to finally buy an awd motor.

It's a funny old world we live in.

agree on the e46 m3 looking good though, lol

i don't think the regular vette looks good, but the c6 z06 in black is quite bad ass. i just wish the seat and steering wheel were better looking.

The M3 is the last M with NA enigne if they will not be any Z4 M. Is the RS5 also the last RS with NA? Or will be the RS4 also get the RS5 engine? I think all, M, AMG and RS are going from NA to FI in the same time.

^ Good article.

This bit is what I was curious about.

But I still wouldn't buy one. I'd have a BMW M3 or Mercedes C63 AMG, simply because of the delicacy of the feedback in those cars. I prefer to be in constant touch with what the car is doing, not feeling isolated from it. Effortless is great, but there's no challenge, and that's where true satisfaction lies.

Piers Ward

It will still sell out as fast as they can get them to dealers. For the money I would not get the Audi/BMW or MB. Each has certain attributes I love but all have deficiencies for me personally. But the perfect car has never been built has it...

Audi RS5 body and interior/MB C63 engine/BMW M3 handling and feel. Voila'.
