My setup is a Gaggia Classic Pro espresso maker and Eureka Specialita grinder.

Added PID for better temperature stability and cut a spring inside to lower the brew pressure to 9bar.

Getting into a rhythm took some time, but now I can make a reproducible 5oz cup (cortado/flat white?) every morning.

Yes, freshly/recently roasted whole beans without a doubt are key to a good tasting cup.

We had the 70's version of this when I was under training on HMCS St. Croix. We use to put broken egg shell on the grind to make the coffee smoother.

At my buddy’s house. Awesome cup of coffee. I may have to take the plunge. Just a lot of counter space and grinder noise.

Ok

I asked for a coffee. That’s what I got and it’s just awesome.

I dont drink coffee but I got wifey a Rancillio Rocky burr grinder several years ago. It's survived/outlasted several coffee makers.

I got her a Technivorm Moccamaster for xmas in 2019. She's still happy with it. I'm surprised about all the flimsy plastic given the price point, though.

Years ago I started off with drip machines and Keurigs. But then I discovered pour over coffee.

Chemex or Hario V60 has been my daily driver ever since. Nothing beats the taste of a good pour over coffee. I find brewing a pour over calming and therapeutic first thing in the morning.

I switched to Chemex about ten years ago and use a Keurig for a Chia Tea every once in awhile.

I have a Baratza Virtuoso which may be a bit overkill if you just do drip, but it can expand to an entry level espresso grinder for some machines if you decide to try that later.

I have a Technivorm Moccamaster and love it, been using it for 16 years now. It is a little on the pricier side (little over $300) and doesn't have any fancy features like timers for the morning but it is rated one of the best drip machines if you do any amount of research or watching reviews. To give you an idea if you have five minutes to spare:

If you don't want to spend that much, my second choice for drip would be the Bonavita.

For espresso I have a fully automatic Delonghi Magnifica XS which can do shots or americanos which mimic drip coffee pretty close. I did a ton of research on espresso machines and at $500 on Costco's website (it comes and goes with being in stock) this is a really good bang for your buck. The only reason I came to know about this machine is at the large corporate office I work at, we had the same Delonghi and it took a beating from about 12 people five days a week for years. When you say your friend's Delonghi was too much work I'm wondering which model because all I do is hit one button and my drink comes out. Beans and water are already loaded in it. It's funny you said french press because I always felt too lazy to use that properly and then have to disassemble and clean it .

I thought Nespresso was cool until I tried a well made cup of coffee. Now I sold mine and have no desire to try another. I know the upfront cost seems steep but over time if you drink a lot of coffee the pods get pretty expensive.

Pictures are of my equipment.
I have been using this brand for many years. I definitely recommend it.

A Breville Barista Express BES870 has been serving me well for the past 3 years and still going strong. Would love to upgrade to a Linea Mini one day.

I find it dusty, not just the sediment in it but the taste. TBH I get the same flavour from Lavazza beans, an almost nutty, sandy flavour. It is very distinct, I don't like it at all.

Wifey switched to the Breville Barista Pro that I got her for Xmas last year and has used it every morning since then.

The Technovorm from 2019 now has backup duty. The plastic on the handle of the carafe cracked last fall, near the top of the handle by the clamping band.

I still find it appalling that these things have so much plastic for the money (kinda like our engine bays).

For all those with the Barista models, I have moved away from using the frother as it is so hard on the appliances pump, which is it's weak point. Instead i use a small saucepan to warm milk then froth with a $12 frother.

I still rotate between a Chemex and a V60. I did just purchase a Fellow "Ode" grinder which will be here in a couple of weeks.

I'd love a "coffee maker", but I can't get over the use of plastics for 200deg water. - can't do it.

I've read the posts here and it's clear that I have a lot to learn about making a good cup of coffee.

I just like black coffee. I have been using a Keurig with a reusable pod and I grind my own beans, just enough for the day. I'm using SF French Roast. I love the way my coffee comes out.

One thing I've learned is the grinder makes a difference. So, I've ordered and will receive today a conical burr grinder. Hopefully, this new grinder will improve my coffee making in a noticeable way.

I bought a pour over set up last year and tried it. Two things I didn't like:

It's slow. I want to make coffee and sit down and drink it, not wait for it.
The coffee was too cold. Because it took so long to brew, the coffee wasn't hot enough for me. Maybe I was doing something wrong. In any case, I gave up on pour over and returned to Keurig and fresh ground beans.

If all I want is black coffee and nothing fancy, am I missing something with a Keurig and conical burr grinder?
