Rising gas prices have me looking at used Tesla Model S

With gas now over $4 a gallon in Cali, I started snooping around Auto Trader for used Model S prices. I was shocked to see they are in the mid-$30k range for decent examples. My wife commutes over 50 miles each way, so the gas money saved would cover most of the payment, and you gotta love the carpool sticker.

I test drove one today with a great price and only 43k miles. I love how much instant torque there is. I’m not in love with the interior, but it was spacious. Hopefully the upcoming i4 will be as good looking as my F32. Unfortunately it won’t be here until 2021, while I might be hopping on the BEV bandwagon very soon.

Used 2017 models are in the mid 30s? Only red and purple are carpool decals are still valid. From what I saw red decals are only issued to 2017 and newer.

Which battery pack in the model S ?

Before purchase test to see what mileage reading you get on the car display at 80% charge. I ask because battery degradation is a common subject on the forum at the Tesla site.

Hate to do it, but not having to put $50 in tank twice a week is tempting.

I really don't like Tesla fanboys but paying $50/wk to fill up makes me cry. A Model 3 or used Model S is an ideal commuter car.

FYI - don't buy a used Tesla from a non-Tesla dealer. Tesla has their own CPO/extended warranty programs at NO extra cost. You WILL want a warranty because NO one is fixing/servicing these cars yet.

Average used Tesla S is about $30k-$40k and comes with a pretty amazing CPO warranty.

As an aside though... hold out until summer 2020. There's going to be A LOT of electric car releases which will drive down Tesla demand... and ultimately pricing... new and used.

EDIT - enjoy! https://www.tesla.com/inventory/used/ms

$6000 civic + 87 octane which is about 2.50 a gal here. i drive 80x5 = 400 miles a week. 32mpg on the highway average 80mph. so I use 12.5 gal x $2.50 = 32 bucks a week. $1500 a year. (daily driving a car that only takes 93, while fun, is going to eat through alot of money. My f30 335 at through over $ 2100/year by comparison).

it'll be a while before a $35000 tesla becomes a better financial decision for me than a used civic. But eventually i'd like to do it.

Don't worry we pay about US$7 per gallon over here

I have considered an i3 94ah BEV to drive during the week to complement the M6 but then I remind myself that I bought the M6 because it has 4 seats, is supposed to a do everything car and I can still park it in any parking building.

The money saving isn't quite there for me to bother with an i3 but if fuel gets to US$10 per gallon then I probably will get an i3, 50/50 to keep the mileage low on the M6 and it won't be costing me anything at all to buy the i3 due to the saving I'll be making - I have done 20k miles in a year in the M6!

I personally think a Model S is a good only car, especially in 100kwh battery form. The i3 clearly isn't and is a good second car, but I think it means the other car is an AMG GT or something with 2 seats.

Civic doesn’t go from 0-60 in 3 seconds and hit the quarter in less than 12 seconds.

How long will it take you to recuperate 30-35k of gas? Let's not forget registration. I just paid $700 for renewal and also insurance and cost of maintenance.

That’s like saying “I’m short, fat, and have a d*ck and 2 balls between my legs, but with some estrogen treatment, stuff some silicone in my chest, suck some fat out of my belly and take a knife to my private’s, I can be passable as ‘hot’ after about 10 beers.”

Sure. If you say so.

I am considering selling my F32 428i and replacing it with a Model S. Not looking for a Civic or Toyota.

I’ve always liked the look of the Model S and now that they are somewhat reasonable, I’m looking into it... that’s all.

3 year lease on that corolla = 9000 dollars. Gas over 3 years = 20 x 52 weeks = $1040. So roughly 10k just payments and gas.

Over 3 years on my civic i will have spent. 6000 for the car + 4500 for gas. 10,500. So roughly about the same cost of ownership over 3 years.

Difference is i still own my car outright after 3 years. And you would have to turn the corolla in. And do another 3 years lease for 9000 dollars on a corolla.
