Job Market is changing
Yesterday me and 4 others got pulled away from our stations to be told that we were being laid off with no expectation of being called back up due to geo political situation in DC and Financial reasons that company we make parts for has decided that they have enough and cancelled their existing contract with my former CNC shop.
Sad and tough time for it to happen but I'll bounce to another shop in my town or surrounding towns. I like my previous pace was 2 miles away and rode my bike to work daily. Felt good. People were great too many nearby and I will remain friends with them. Hate being the new guy at a place because this happens. With current recession looming all those help wanted signs I expect to seee start disappearing quite soon. |

That sucks. Good luck to you.
I realize things are different across industries but I don’t know what is going on. I can’t get people to come in for interviews, or they accept job offers and don’t show up. And it’s not generational. |

We find it difficult to find qualified people for a variety of positions. The last one we made an offer to called to say he went in to give notice at his old company and they made him a counter offer.... so we went on to the second candidate. He replied he would not be able to pass a drug test, and that he had no desire to change his ways. Years (decades really) ago, in a different career, we were looking for a unique set of skills (no, not those skills) and when we found the right person we offered him a job. Fast forward to his start date and he was a no show. No call, no nothing. We were starting him at $175 an hour with the potential for a little overtime. I wanted to reach out to him to find out where he ended up but decided to just move on. |

Sorry to hear man, hopefully you land quickly. I know certain companies and industries are not immune but it does still seem to be a healthy market, at least here.

Sorry to hear this OP. Was in the same boat early 2009 and it took me 4.5 years to find work. Was collecting NYS unemployment for a lousy $430 a week for two years until I landed a pizza delivery gig for about 2 years delivering in an e28 and a e39 M5.
Good times. |

Landed a new job yesterday, CNC world is active and got a pay raise as well. But same hours....50 a week. We will see how long this one plays out. Company says they are diversified enough but as did the last one.

Hoping you update the message board a few months from now with how it was a blessing in disguise!! Loads of opportunities out there - it's critical NOT to let recession talk get in your way of finding those opportunities - life goes on - America goes on - the economy goes on!

I completely redid my career path since we first met when you were helping with the E30 because I kind of hit some walls in my industry at the time. Moved into healthcare (but ops) because I wanted something I could see myself growing old with. |

Good luck OP. Sucks to hear.
I'm in the IT field and stuff is all over the map. There are a lot of retirements happening due to the aging boomers, so a lot of openings. With those openings there are opportunities, but some of them are not good at all. Lots of agencies looking to fill positions but looking to replace 2 or 3 people for the salary of one entry level person. That won't attract anyone with prices of everything going up. I recently reviewed a position for a client I used to work with. They want to hire an IT manager of 12 schools, who can also do network stuff, helpdesk role, and web development for $60-80k. Some markets are flooded with candidates, others you will struggle to find someone. A lot of it has to do with education and the mess that has been created telling everyone they need to go to college and steering people away from trades. I have a friend that drives a dump truck locally for a town municipality. He makes more than some of the people in my dept with degrees.

Not just them, lots of businesses out there just completely insane. Ive been hit up with "offers" like that too, crap wages for trying to shoehorn you into 3 positions. They want decades of experience but trying to hire for a job only a 24 year old would fall for.
The funniest one was recently, got a hard press from a recruiter from tropical smoothie cafe for a CIO position. I kept asking for a range, etc, recruiter just pivoted to my ask so I gave them a reasonable bump quote and she was like, "lets connect you." On the call with the c suites they were like "we love you, we can offer you $80k!" Uhh, you know this isnt Hays, KS right? |
