Official Bimmerpost Photo Contest #18: Wintery H2O Phases
Official BimmerPost Photo Contest #18: Wintery H2O Phases
________________________________________ RULES: 1. Any interpretation of the theme that falls within Bimmerpost.com rules is welcome. 2. You must be the person that took the photo. Previous photos are acceptable as long as you are the one that captured the image. 3. One submission per contest. 4. Images must be no larger than 800px in any direction. Links to larger images are allowed but you must have one that is under 800px for the poll. 5. All contestants must host their own pictures (which includes hosting them on bimmperpost). 6. All images must have a title. 7. While post processing in Photoshop is allowed, adding or removing parts of the picture is not. In the event a photo is suspected to be "photo-chopped," the contestant will be asked to provide the original picture. THEME: Wintery H2O Phases - With winter upon us, I figured Id like to try a theme centered around showcasing the various phases of water. yes, I know, not everyone here gets snow (albeit, if I had my way you all would...misery loves company)... This submission does not have to be SNOW. There are many different forms of cold water, many of which, have nothing to do with winter and can be found on a day to day basis. Cold water includes condensation, vapor, ice, liquid water, whatever you can come up with. Steaming soup does NOT count, I'm looking for the cold end of the spectrum. *I reserve the right to enforce these standards as necessary. Avoid scientific lectures Be creative, have fun, dont get hurt IMPORTANT DATES: Entries must be submitted to this thread no later than Sunday, December 27th at MIDNIGHT CST. The poll will commence shortly thereafter. Shoot ****ENTRY TIME EXTENDED BY AN EXTRA WEEK...IF ANYONE OBJECTS....please do so publicly ****

Can you believe it? No rain in Seattle for the last two weeks, so no cold water to snap!

I had an idea from what I saw yesterday, but the weather didn't cooperate today. Hopefully tomorrow, but the forecast isn't looking promising....
Although there is a chance of snow tonight. Not what I had in mind, but I'll have to see if I can make it work....

I live in FL, so no snow or ice to photograph. I tried to experiment with ice cubes and stuff from my freezer, but nothing was coming out the way I wanted it and I ran out of ideas.

To be frank, I'd vote for a theme change (perhaps something holiday-ish). |

I wouldn't suggest changing it, I just can't participate in it. It's hard to take a picture of something cold when it is 87 degrees out in the middle of December, lol. Let those who can have their fun.

Quite frankly I don't really care. I'm just saying that it should be something that everyone can participate in. |

I don't really see the problem here. Yes if you all want to be generic and take pictures of snow, sure... some people in AZ or FL might be at a disadvantage however, using your creativity you might actually be able to take something that is unique enough to catch everyones eye and win the contest. Having to think outside of the box is usually where people show their best stuff. Like I said, yeah you might not be able to take a picture of the snow melting off your car but who ever said that was the kind of photo that was required. Go set up a backdrop, get a glass of ice water and try some weird lighting techniques or something like that... you'd be surprised what you can come up with. http://www.flickr.com/photos/acurazi...7604193574534/ |

^ backdrop? setup? this is not a contest where you win prizes. So why make it harder on those that want to participate? Why not just choose something that people can easily go out and shoot. It's like having a desert theme. How can you be creative there? Of course snow is generic but it is basically ice. Perhaps it should have been called "cold phases of water" or "winter ice, snow, etc." After all, there is simply water in the winter too. Heck it's been cold over here as well but we only thing we have had is rain.
Look at all the people that have replied to this thread and see where they live. Most, if not all, live in colder climate thus they'd rather not have a theme change. If the theme was to shoot something tropical in winter I guarantee those people would vote for a theme change in a heart beat. I'm probably not gonna participate either way. I just wanted to voice my opinion that these kind of contests should be easy. Hell even the real professional contests (in which there are prizes) have general themes. Ever wonder why there were only 4 replies in 5 days after this thread was made (until I bumped it)? |

I don't know why people didn't comment on it, I've been in finals mode for the last week and a half so I just saw it a few days ago. It's a good theme and making you (the photographer) think outside of the box and shoot things you might not normally think to shoot is the reason these contests exist. If you don't like that and want to sit out until you can submit something you've already shot then that is your choice (and please understand that when I say "you" I am using that in a general term, addressing everyone, not you specifically). I don't see why its such a big deal. Get creative, use the extension Vudoo gave us all or else just sit an wait until the next one comes along. |

Try arranging glasses in a tasteful manner. Condensation works. Ice cubes gather light in interesting ways. Use refraction and a cool but simpe backdrop. Idk. It's not too challenging but people in snowy conditions might have an upperhand. It just makes the other entries that much more applause-worthy.
For people having a sunny winter, how about a corona commercial-esque picture.
