also, its been tested that amber is more "eye catching" than a clear reflector. anyways what would the government care if they look ugly or not?

The DOT has set regulations on the lighting that vehicles can have. One of these statutes is to have an orange reflector towards the front of the vehicle and a red one towards the back.

I still don't understand why BMW could not have put an orange reflector inside of a clear housing. I have a Lexus 2001 RX300 that has clear fronts. There is an orange reflector inside of the clear housing, but unless the lights are turned on you would never know there is an orange reflector in there. The same generally applies to the rears. There is a red reflector inside of a clear housing. The red reflector in the rears is more noticeable than the orange in the front, but you get the effect of a clear housing while still following DOT regulation. An our lights on the RX300 are totally stock, no upgrades.

I know it's DOT regulation but States as well have their own DOT regulations as well.
- For example some car are only 49 states valid since Cali has some of the most stringent regulations - Some states, counties, require inspections - And I would agree with the DOT on yellow (amber). Look at the way people drive here in the states. Are you sure you want to change it to clear? Just because something looks good or better doesn't mean it's safer. In Europe they have clears and in Germany you have the autobahn...would you support an high-speed expressway in the United States? ...Not with the way people drive today. |

The world market lobbied for the amber inserts for the US-market e90s... to get back at us for our cheaper prices
In all fairness, I would imagine they could come up with a less garish solution. Maybe Chris Bangle, who had his hands tied up throughout the e90 development process, went crazy with some orange marker pens at the 11th hour, as a big 'F U' to his BMW bosses
