How to respond to this
I have about 5 lines I would like to use right now, but don't want to be offensive to others.

I'll be honest... either was I. I think theme wasn't hit on the nose by anyone (at least effectively... including myself) so we are just going on what draws out emotion in everyone specifically rather than the effectiveness in drawing out any emotion in the viewer. For instance my photo draws out emotion to me because I am a huge Pcar fanboi and they mean a lot to me as my dad was too... there is a connection. I don't have a connection to a woman struggling to finish a race personally (even though i am a runner) nor do I have one to a hummingbird. The point of the contest was to create an emotion in the viewer by showing them something emotional in the subject. nobody did that very well, most not at all. Judd might have come close but I think the title kills it and TBH I think the model isn't really showing us an emotion but rather just a face. You don't get the sense of what she is going through at that point in time (if he had titled it "time out" or something, it might have stretched well enough to work). If something like this was used it would be different. http://www.resiliencei.com/data/medi...0for%20web.jpg
You see the emotion in the subject and thus are given an emotion in turn. Now if there was something inspiring like the continental divide or a sunset over fiji... sure that might evoke some emotion in us but the strongest relationship would be with another person experiencing that emotion and putting yourself there in their shoes to feel it too. just my $.02 of babbling |

I know what you're saying and understand completely, but for someone to come in and say "not feeling much here" and having never contributed anything to the forum before, that's just a big step in the wrong direction.
I look forward to when they start contrubuting. but until such time, comments like theirs don't belong. For example, you contribute a ton, and you contributed very well by how you worded your post, it was constructive and made sense in the application to this thread. I'm a huge fan of people with constructive comments.... But that had no realavence to anything. sorry, i'm ranting now I agree with badger 100% it's a completely subjective topic, everyone is going to have something that speaks differently to each of us. But i think it was still neat to see peoples interpretation of the idea. perhaps that was a better challenge then it was a contest. |

exactly. what stirs one will almost certainly not stir another. there is no universal standard for emotion...it's hard with just one photograph come up with for a contest in a two week span to capture some essence of something that triggers a feeling in a large group of individuals.

ha, longtime 'lurker' you could say, but please do go by my post count
and you can be straightforward and call me an asshole although i'm not being one. just being honest. i don't find these photos very emotional. good composition on the majority but nothing evokative |

if you want c&c then i'll go out on a limb and say that the only photo that moved me a bit would be the one of the dog. the wincing face combined with the photo's appropriate title made me feel a degree of pity
i can understand the motif behind the other shots but they don't create any emotional reaction, perhaps that's because the viewer might have to understand the context of the shot when it was taken in person. and to be blunt, some shots weren't composed well enough to do much for me anyways udub is right though, some people like to speak their minds and skip the pleasantries Last edited by schweppes; 08-17-2011 at 10:58 AM.. |

I do agree with this, I look at the photos to try and determine if there's any emotional feeling I get. It was a tough subject...missed by many.

This is the point I'm trying to make, if you want to be taken seriously, post something constructive, and now you have. There's a big contrast between this comment and "not really feeling much here" as a first post. That's all. Welcome to the boards, look forward to more contributions from yourself, and hope many others stop lurking and join up and contribute as well. |

damnit rodi, quit voting the same way I do.
Out of curiosity... did people choose their vote(s) by looking at the combined title and the photo? Or the photos themselves?
