2023 Mazda CX-50

Anyone considering the new 2023 Mazda CX-50? Looks like they'll finally hit dealerships in a few weeks.

https://www.mazdausa.com/vehicles/cx-50

Pretty thick range of mid-size SUVs but I'm liking these more and more.
> AWD with a 6sp automatic
> a 2.5L I4 with a twin scroll turbo (256hp @ 5000 and 320 lb-ft @ 2000)
> Built in the States

Been thinking of checking one out as a replacement for our daily.

This will easily be another hit for Mazda, especially since its been developed specifically for the US market.

Not cheap though, 2.5L turbo's will be base at 37k and ranging into mid 40's. That's a lot of change for a mid sized Mazda.

Are they $50k over MSRP? I’m only interested in cars which require the sacrifice of a first born child to purchase.

How about a Bronco? Ford has your back.

Yeah, I just looked. $40k to get the trim with the good stereo. Everything is so damn expensive now.

We will probably keep our '18 Mazda 3 for a while, as I continue to decide what fun car I want to get.

Love the interior but not a fan of the exterior black cladding and rugged look. I wish they made the fender trim body color.

They did that on purpose. If you want a more elegant exterior, they are offering the top level CX-5 with painted cladding, while its CX-50 sibling is aimed more at American tastes with a wider body and more rugged appearance.

I saw a review saying there is cross stitching down the middle of the seats that you can feel. I really like the look of the crossover, but I don't think I can drive with that cross stitch feeling on my crack. Shame.

The CX-5 has the older interior design that looks dated. The current gen has been around since 2017 so it's long in the tooth. I'll be shopping for a premium SUV for the wife within the next year. So far the top 3 choices are the CX-50, RDX, and X3.

Might be worth it to wait for the CX-70, will be Mazda US' first RWD-based SUV, and maybe even an Inline-6.

You make it sound like a bad thing. You'll just get a bigger ipad and hvac controls on a screen. Get the old one whilst you can.

I personally prefer the CX-5 looks. That excessive and totally unnecessary fender flare cladding cheapens and dilutes the KODO design language. Japanese car makers like Subaru, Mazda and others may need to rethink their “Americans love off-road looking cars with lots of cladding” strategy.

I think they're already being delivered, as I have seen a few on the streets here in Charlotte. Definitely heavy on the cladding but not as overwraught as recent Subarus imo (looking at you, Wilderness trims on Forester and Outback...)

Agree 100%.

I owed a CX-5 Signature (tiny cladding) and was going to buy a CX-30 for my son -- decided on Mazda 3 Turbo Sedan instead due to the increased cladding on the CX-30.

The future CX-70 and CX-90 will be on Mazda's RWD platform which can support an I6. The CX-50 is still on the FWD-based platform shared with the Mazda 3 and CX-30.

Earlier this month, they announced the Mazda 6 would not return. The I6 is alive and well, in both Gas and Diesel variants, with only the former likely to reach the US. The recently announced European/Asian Market CX-60 (which the US CX-70 will be based upon) is to be the first Mazda to receive the new I6 engines.

Mazda Details Inline-Six 3.0-Liter Gasoline And 3.3-Liter Diesel Engines

Gotcha, thanks for the link. That's very Volvo-ish. Which would typically be a good thing, but I have really liked Mazda's design language the last few years.
