Talking Rented a 2018 AMG GT for 3 days

Went down to Fl for the Dolphins v Steelers game & decided to rent a AMG GT for the trip because why not?

I'll likely sell my C8Z, after finally sitting in a 3LT C8, if GM ever gets around to actually letting us buy one. I'm just not impressed at all. So I'm trying to narrow things down. I have been set on a V10 R8 for a while, but want to check out my other options as well.

GM still has the leather peeling on the dash issue (Been a problem since the C6). They seriously can't get that right by now?!

I know the C8 is a $60k car so it's not going to be new R8 or Bentley level of interior quality, but still. Oof IMO.

My lady also disliked the wall of buttons design...a lot.

Anyway, onto the AMG GT...

Definitely fun to drive & clearly has power. Not too bad out of the hole either. A lot better than my Hellcat LOL.

Loved all the carbon fiber inside. Loved the power adjustable bolsters on the seat. Something I have missed since I sold my 335xi long ago.

Fun to drive, handles well, etc. Definitely needs an aftermarket exhaust as stock is too tame for me. The seat bottom was very uncomfortable, though. My butt started to hurt after just a few minutes. I'm wondering if the seats in this one were some sort of special option competition seats & the base seats have more cushion?

I also could not find a spot to comfortably rest my right arm & hand. Ended up either on my leg or hand hanging into the open cup holder. Very much shutting off at lights & stuff. I drove in Sport+ most of the time so a non-factor for my short time, though. Also dislike no remote start.

Not sure if just because this was a Turo rental or not, but the trunk took A LOT of force to close right. Using the paddle shifters, the shifts were quick & smooth.

Overall, I don't think I would buy one if that is indeed the only seat option. If there are different seats, still no at the around $90k they are now because of upside down world, but when they get back to around $60k I think this car is a good buy.

Plan is to find a 911 Turbo & V10 R18, and I am sure other cars, around home & see what I like/dislike.

I agree with you. However, to most non car enthusiasts, the AMG GT certainly has a more exotic look with the big long hood and stubby rear. Yes Mercedes isn't Porsche, but 911's are also a dime a dozen.

See i hate long hoods, it's like i am driving the car remote control. Most people will see this and think it's an e-class cab.

I don't know, my neighbour has one and I don't think anyone thinks it's an E Class cab/coupe...even my kids think it's a "race car" lol. Love it or hate it, they are wide and long and have quite a bit of presence.

I don’t know if it’s just the spec of what but that one looks terrible compared to most that I’ve seen. When I sat in one it felt incredibly cramped and I’m not even a tall person. Never drove one but if it’s the 4.0 V8 the engine is pretty nice for a turbo.

Thanks for the report. What were the Turo+owner fees as a percentage of the entire bill? I see reasonable listed rental rates on Turo but you have to click through the whole process and provide a photo before the fees are listed.

Agree with your report. I would also add that MB reliability is far worse than many realize. The 4.0L TT V8 in that car is developing a reputation for rear main oil seal leak at less than 100k miles, so it would be out of consideration for me on that basis alone. It's a pity. I do like MB exterior styling but the poor reliability is too bitter a pill to swallow.

At that price range for a sports car I would go with the newest/lowest mileage 911 or 718 with a clean title and in reasonable condition.

I like the amg GT, but that's a terrible example of one, the vert of that model looks absolutely rubbish. I also agree with what what said before, P's these days are a dime a dozen, unless you can grab a real nice air cooled one.

I’ve seen this posted a lot lately that 911s are a dime a dozen. I don’t get it Porsche sells about 7000-10000 a year on average in USA. It’s not like there are a ton out there.

lol looks are subjective. I am a lover of verts so I'd opt for vert over coupe on anything if possible 99% of the time

There is a reason 911s are a dime a dozen. They're so much "better" in 90% of their use cases than the other options. I think the gt and the audi r8 both looks better and have way more curb pizzazz, but they don't do sports car as well as the 911 they cost way more to maintain andthey're not as comfortable. Plus for me the major defining feature for me was the option of a real mqnual

I get that part and I see Ferraris or lambs rather regularly. But It’s funny hearing it on a BMW forum considering how few 911 are made annually and how many BMW are - even M Models only.

Most are saying 911's are a dime a dozen for the type of car it is, not in comparison to BMW in general or even M models for that matter.

911s are a "dime in a dozen" because they are the gold standard of sports car and have been for generations. To add to that it has above average reliability for a sports car, holds its value remarkably well, and has a dedicated enthusiast community you'd become a part of. Just get a more interesting color to stand out like guards red, speed yellow, or custom order miami blue.

AMG GT is cool but also just seems like one of those Merc grand tourers to me. It feels like a bathtub to sit inside too. If I didn't care so much about handling and steering feel I'd certainly want one.

The AMG is an incredible car but value wise it's currently a giant turd in makeup. Once the market gets back to normal, these cars are actually worthless.

I'll say it again, join me bruh. It's time.

I really don't see me straying from going for a V10 R8, but I have to wait till I can A) Order my C8Z (I'm in the top 300 at 1 of the big 3 dealers) & B) wait for delivery then C) sell it LOL

We're also house shopping so another monkey wrench. Oh well, in due time. The longer it takes the more the market corrects anyway so I win

they are nice cars. DCT + ttv8. and mercedes dealers are pretty easy to find compared to exotics like aston martin, porsche, or maserati.

if you want a luxury cruiser its better than the F-type imo, but still behind the LC500. though it does weigh ALOT less than those two.

If you want a sports car its behind the 911.
