Maybe a better way of putting it is: 50% of US M2 buyers don't believe the DCT is worth $2900 over the standard gearbox. Is this a statement we can agree with?

Least we don't have to drive a CVT.

Last time I test drove one it was... Let me just say. Hell no. The way Honda CVT pretends it's shifting is hilarious.

I would pay $5K more for a MT.
Agree with you - this guy saying the take rate would be the same is wrong.

6MT for the win. Would easily pay more to get the man card status.

I wish BMW would take a more proactive approach and save the manual with innovation. Imagine a manual with "torque fill" during shifts so you're not losing out against the DCT counterpart. Imagine a semi-auto mode for when you're tired and stuck in city traffic. Both can be achieved by electrifying the transmission.

...sorta but no... autotrans actually makes me think $2900 less of the car, if that makes sense. I wouldn't buy the automatic even if it was the mega-discount option!

I'd still pick the manual even if DCT was the same price.

I HATE this trend...they're supposed to be the best engineers, so figure out how to make the DCT work with additional BHP. Porsche does it...

I am not impressed by any of the ZF cars I've driven...the shifts, especially down, appear to be in slow motion compared to the DCTs or PDK I have owned.

Torque Fill (I swear Chris Harris, coined the phrase) is where an eMotor spools up before the turbo does, eliminating turbo lag, on a hybrid drivetrain.

Fully aware of that, hence the quotation marks. I don’t know if there’s a name for the feature I’m describing, but it fills the gap in power transmission during shifts.

BMW just needs to add a eDrive unit to the tranny.

And you can expect that in short order.

Problem solved.

It doesn't matter what he did at Audi. Every company is different.
We are seeing an AWD M5. Not every company is different. It all depends on personnel and Van Meek is a total Audi guy...he spent his entire career at Audi you better bet he's bringing Audi to BMW.

I love the backhanded dig at the end.

That's optimistic. I hope you're right!

If hybrid capability isn't needed, the energy storage requirement would be extremely low. Even a slow 1st-2nd shift would be done under two seconds, so the system only needs a tiny battery or maybe a capacitor.

AWD M5 was in the works before Van Meel joined BMW.

My 82 year old mom can drive a manual. It's not rocket science, just more fun! I'm pretty sure women like to have fun too.
