BMW Introduces Three Electric Scooters

Quote:
Lately, cities like London and Paris are abuzz with electric scooters that have joined the traffic of a handful of other major urban centers around the world.

Now BMW has just unveiled three scooters that will be hitting the market in September 2019. The German brand has teamed up with Micro (inventor of the Micro Scooter) to fuse engineering with design, resulting in a trio of scooter models.

The flagship model is the 799 EUR (approx. $895 USD) road-ready BMW E-Scooter, which promises a 20 km/h (12 mph) top speed, weighs in at 9 kilograms (20 lbs), includes two separate braking systems, plus embedded front and rear lights for safety. The scooter takes only two hours to fully charge its lithium-ion battery, while the body is finished in a matte black design.

The E-Scooter is accompanied by two motorless, kick-powered models, the 200 EUR (approx. $224 USD) City Scooter, and a children’s model the 120 EUR (approx. $134 USD) Kids Scooter. The City edition folds neatly into a compact form for easy storage and convenience in the city, while the Kids version features training wheels for tykes from the age of three to 12.

All BMW scooters are available for purchase at selected BMW dealers. The BMW E-Scooter will be available starting from September 2019.

Those things are toys. If I need mobility I take my electric supermoto. If I need more mobility I take one of my high speed (40+) electric bicycles. If I need more mobility than that, where the hell am I going? Maybe some place I'd be better off on foot.

I was talking to a friend who recently bought his own electric scooter. He bought the Xiaomi one (https://www.amazon.com/Xiaomi-Electr...dp/B076KKX4BC/).

At $500 ($400 cheaper), but providing a top speed of 15.5MPH (vs. 12MPH) and a range of 19 miles (vs. 7.5 miles), it seems like BMW is technically far behind. The badge premium is pretty massive here, I guess it makes sense that it's posted on highsnobiety. Also that for these lower-cost products marketed to a young, hip audience, it may be much easier to swallow a huge %-wise cost premium.

These started appearing all over Los Angeles since one of the largest companies deploying these (Bird) is based here.

I joke about this sometimes replacing the M cars, but it is very real in that I have several friends who used to drive semi-enthusiast cars, and now live carless, using cheap Uber rides and now buying (or looking at buying) these scooters. Maybe this is why it's hard to sell sports cars to Gen Z
