I found this and thought it might be interest some people. It turns out BMW does carry out some of the retrofits that owners do like Xenon lights etc and they also do things that I didn't know that was possible so I am attaching the pdf to this post. The PDF shows what is possible to do, what gets changed/added and approximate cost and labour hours.

Hmmm it says the HK sound system can be retrofitted for $3800. The option is like $900. Is the rest installation?

It is somewhat hard work as they have to remove almost every single trim inside and then do a factory copy of installation with OEM equipment everywhere. It is cheaper to have it when you are ordering it as the installation is much easier in factory, just think about all those cable groups, units etc. removing the old stuff and maintaining the rest of those cables while adding new ones. I believe the hardware is about $2900 and the rest is labour.

Another reason why it's so expensive to retrofit options - when the car option is selected during build it's the difference in price between regular and updated components, while during retrofit you have to buy all affected components again (and then _maybe_ recoup some cost by selling old parts).
