Back then I had to re-wire my garage myself, by soldering bell wire and a relay from the artist formerly known as Radio Shack, and use IFTTT commands, and used the SmartThings app to open my garage door from my iPhone 5.

What does that cost?
Fingers crossed for some good Smartthings integration. The main thing I'm expecting is using the car as a presence sensor. Maybe have it close my garage door if I drive away and forget. I've seen some people cobble together a few interesting things. Like have the car's headlights flash if motion is detected on the driveway. |

I wouldn't count on it coming any time soon. Apparently google wants access to a bunch of information through the car and BMW doesn't want to give that up, even though their direct competitors (Merc/Audi) and dozens of others have no problem offering it. Probably because they can't charge a monthly fee for it like they can with carplay.

This is why Google Maps isn't the default navigation on the iPhone. Apple didn't want to give Google all that user info.

I wouldn't be surprised if it did, in fact, have Alexa. They announced BMWs would have Alexa mid year this year last fall. I had suspected it would be a software update.

I'll take the increased privacy. BMW usually tries to get out in front of potential legal issues - for example - setting the Speedo to read +3 Mph over actual in order to avoid potential litigation on speeding tickets. I can imagine they are absolutely avoiding getting dragged into a privacy issue via sharing information with vendors. |
