Playing around with my new ND filter. Not the best weather, but it does a good job of preserving cloud detail.

yes 'does. Fun to shoot really slow shutter speed and pop a flash to illuminate your subject/forground with the ND filters. works well on moving car panning shots

My 5Dii, ISO100, 35L, f/2 @13s. Everything kinda came together for this shot, i only wish i'd gotten the focus a little better.

i have a few shots at proper apertures, i was looking for the focus to fade as the cars did in the distance, if that makes sense. here's one at a smaller aperture.

yeah i see what youre going for...

the 1st one doesn't bother me but i do agree the 2nd is the "proper" way to shoot that kind of stuff.

I'd suggest the heaviest CF tripod that you can afford. CF does seem to damp better. I've got the Induro CT-414, which'll handle a very heavy rig and is still comfortable to carry.

I owned the Manfrotto 055. It was pretty darn good, but I'd warn against Manfrotto's littany of quick release plates and receivers. They've got about four different systems. Serious people, like TL, need to just jump to an Arca-Swiss style quick release on their head and cameras. I gave up on Manfrotto's heads and quick release when I ended up with around three systems. Now, everything is Arca-Swiss. (A-S is a brand, but other brands offer Arca-Swiss style quick release mechanisms).

I'm talking fairly expensive, like $1,000 for tripod, head and release systems, but it'll be worth it and is comparable to a camera body upgrade.

Josh, I actually prefer the first shot, because of the paving detail and the amount of "equivalent" light giving horizon view. The OOF BG isn't disturbing at all here because of the vanishing perspective and it's not totally OOF.

Given the shooting that you like to do, you really do need to invest in a great tripod and ballhead.

I like the first shot as well. It's interesting that the taillight trail has a break in it down by the blue roadside sign. Maybe some fog moving across the road there dulled the lights as the cars went through?

i prefer the first as well, it's a bit of a break from the standard sort of long exposure of cars, which is what i wanted.
i have a manfrotto 055XPROB and 488RC4, and that serves me pretty well. i like the head, at least. i do need a new, better set of legs that are sealed. i don't shoot with a tripod enough to justify spending upwards of $300 though. maybe only once or twice a month, if that.

no, traffic headed that direction wasn't very heavy....that's just as far as the cars made it before the end of the exposure.

The ND filter works pretty well on the 10-22mm as well. No CPL here.

More great rays Mark.

Here's what I did this evening:

House wren poses on a Russian olive tree by dcstep, on Flickr

Canon 7D, EF 500mm f/4L IS 800, f/4, Av Mode, +2/3EV resulting in 1/2500th sec.

That's a house wren.

That's incredible detail for ISO 800, Dave. Must be a killer lens.
