I still have a job, but I lost my second job - can I get unemployment?
Good day gents,
I'm just trying to gain a bit of insight. In March of 2020, two weeks before the COVID shutdowns, I lost my part-time business intelligence consultant job I had for five years. The company decided to tighten the financial belt on their consultants and not renew my contract. My projects were transitioned to their in house staff. I worked a minimal amount of hours per month from home, which returned about 30K a year in supplemental income. While I figured I would probably be able to replace that lost income in a month or two depending on the job market, and then COVID-19 hit, which brought on the financial crisis coupled with skyrocketing job loss and unemployment. I never thought to file unemployment until recently when my wife suggested I look into it. While my family and I are doing ok, thank god, it's still a loss of a portion income. I went to the unemployment website to do some quick research. However, I'm in the unknown about my eligibility status since I still have my primary job. My primary job salary is slightly under six figures, and there is the assumption that I might not be eligible, but I could be incorrect. I never filed unemployment before, so I'm not sure how the partial or full or of the different rules. It's nearly impossible to get any customer service. It would be good if I could recoup some of my lost income while trying to line up another secondary income. Any feedback is much appreciated. |

Dude...you chose to start looking into this NOW when the best benefits have already ended..?? A bit late to the party.
At the very least, unemployment aside, you should have filed for PPP months ago. That would have supplemented 2.5 months of your consulting income via govt grant that you wouldn't have even had to pay back: https://www.bankrate.com/loans/perso...ment-benefits/ |

^ This. Also.....you make just shy of six figures and feel that you need unemployment???
Yeah, you're going to be the recipient of bad news all the way around. There is good news though you already make more than double of the average american.....that still has any source of income whatsoever. |

No offense but how much research did you actually do? NYC unemployment is pretty clear cut. If you are STILL making a little under 6 figures at a job, you're way over the dollar amount threshold. The other threshold is if you are working 4 days a week or more, then you dont qualify for unemployment regardless.
You still have your primary income. This is not the purpose of unemployment. Last edited by 9M71; 08-07-2020 at 04:39 PM.. |

In my state of Ohio, you are required to actively seek employment and log all of the places you've applied. I've done this before in the past. Fortunately I was able to find a new job of similar position in 4 weeks. They will take into account your severance pay and any other income you are receiving. My first and only check I got from the unemployment office was $1200 of which $300 was taken out for taxes.

I have 3 jobs.
1. Mecum Auctions (photographer) 2. Coalter Insurance (IT) 3. VisualEchos Photography/Rig-Pro When COVID hit I lost all of my main income from Mecum, and have been living off of savings + my small IT and photography jobs. I never thought to file for unemployment, or even knew how to do so. I think the time for that has passed now, unfortunately. |

Also, ton of holes in your brief story. Consultant of intelligence? Yet you come to a BMW forum claiming to make almost 100k and ask for advice for unemployment? Perhaps you should have done some research of your own, formulate a game plan, then put it into action. Instead, you come here and ask our opinion/advice regarding unemployment benefits all while making more than most who actually need unemployment. When you get to a point where you have lost your home, your cars, the wife, are homeless and need advice, then come to us and cry us a river. We'll listen then. Intelligence consultant.....and you come to a BMW forum for advice on money problems and unemployment claiming to make almost 100k. I'm F'n dying over here. Get mad at us and stay mad at us, but if you can't see your own hypocrisy, then you deserve the hazing until you figure out why your'e getting hazed. BTW, I make half of what you do, single income, live alone and live like a king. I just can't feel sorry for you. Quote:
Private school??? There's a necessity! I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the intelligence consultant bit, not understanding how any of this works, refusal of making the effort to do it on your own, asking members of a BMW forum for advice.......and then calling other people idiots. Too rich. Good luck to you sir. Last edited by King Rudi; 08-07-2020 at 01:49 PM.. |

Are you unemployed? No. Then you don't qualify. That should have been pretty obvious. As for lashing out at people because you over-extended yourself on your mortgage and sent your kids to private school to keep up with the Joneses, that's hysterical! |
