F1 2022: Hungarian GP - Budapest (July 31)

Quote:
When was the track built?

Work began on the Hungaroring in 1985, and the track was race-ready just nine months later. The Hungarian government had originally considered reviving the old Nepliget park circuit in Budapest in a bid to host Formula 1 in the country, but in the end decided to create a purpose-built facility instead.
When was its first Grand Prix?

The year was 1986. Nelson Piquet won the first F1 race around the Hungaroring, famously slithering his Williams around the outside of Ayrton Senna’s Lotus to take the lead.
What’s the circuit like?

The lack of straights at the Hungaroring often sees it compared to a karting circuit – and it’s true, the resemblance is uncanny. With several series of corners to string together, teams opt for Monaco levels of downforce, with a well-sorted chassis tending to be rewarded over horsepower given the short straights on offer. It’s a challenge many of the drivers relish, however, with finding a good rhythm key to setting fast lap times.
Why go?

Hungary in July is usually hot hot hot. The good news if you’re at the track, though, is that there’s a water park close by – the Mogyorodi Aquarena vizi szorakoztatopark – which should be a good place to cool off. Away from aqueous activities, the circuit is only 20km from Budapest, putting you close to one of Europe’s most fascinating, storied and lively city centres.
Where is the best place to watch?

The track is built in a natural bowl, a bit like the UK's Brands Hatch. That means that any of the grandstands located on or around the main straight should provide a view of other parts of the track too, giving you more F1 bang for your, er, forint.

I love this track - super technical. Not the greatest track for racing but I still find it pretty entertaining. Qualifying will be critical.

I think Ferrari should be on fire here (not literally, I hope - would love to see some good racing)

Mercedes/Alpine should be really weak here.

I expect Haas to have a strong showing here too.

The confusion about Sainz' pitstop was so strange. I think Sainz influenced that chaos a little bit too.

Some reports are claiming that reliability upgrades are coming but not sure if it will be there for Hungary. Aside from bad strategy, that's really been their worst enemy.

Last years H'ring BOT was the suicide bod that ruined RB's and others drivers' race, I still think about that from time to time of how he was asleep when even with a wet track the vision was clear as the marker boards were perfectly visible and he didn't have a viable explanation.

Alonso humbled Lewis real quick during that race. Wasn't the first time we heard "some dangerous driving going on."

Some more crazy Verstappen stats:

Since the Imola GP, Max alone has outscored every driver and constructor, except for Ferrari where he is 208 points vs Ferrari 210 points.

Unfortunately for Chas it's looking more like Carlito should carry the mantle for Ferrari for the rest of the season, he has matured from his offs earlier on and can read situations coming even telling the pit what the best thing is to do with regards to tyres and altering a set strat.
Ferrari should come straight and admit if there was a fault with Lec's throttle but he only mentioned this after the hit which may have dislodged it some with his attempt to reverse out of the barrier hence the scream.

I also expect the ferrari's to be really fast on this track. I expect it really suits the cars. I expect them to outclass the RB's with so many slowish corners.

But as for a prediction for the finish order....I hardly dare to put any Ferrari in there now, as the keep making mistakes on mistakes. If the driver doesn't make a mistake, then for sure the car will break down. And when that doesn't happen, Ferrari will make a strategic mistake....

I certainly don't hope for a rerun of last year where that mega crash greatly determined the outcome where only one of the favorits came out undamaged (and didn't even win! )

But lets assume none of these happen and that the finish order is a result of battle on the track:

1. LEC
2. SAI
3. VER
4. PER
5. RUS
6. HAM
7. NOR
8. ALO
9. BOT
10. OCO

A bit of a boring result (at least the top6), I know.

I don’t think MB is able to pass top 4 cars of Ferrari & RB… have they yet this year? Can’t count Russell well played VSC end, I am talking about being able to actually pass a car under racing conditions. Seems to me both cars are only putting out enough power to let them keep or slightly drift off pace.

I’ll go with:
1.) Chaz
2.) Max
3.) Carlos
4.) Checo
5.) Ham
6.) Mag

RUS looks to be a little frustrated and feels heat of Lewis pulling ahead of him... I wouldn’t be surprised if he crashes out and takes someone with him on an overly aggressive and rushed move. Depending where he qualifies it could be Checo, but I’d guess his qualifying will be closer to 12th.

The MB engine seems like they went for way too much reliability over performance and it’s costing them. Now that they got aero issues mostly squared away they lost all that time to bring the engine up to speed.

I actually think this race can end up being a 1-2 for Ferrari but I'm expecting a strong performance from Max in qualifying to keep him in the fight.
