Chris Harris drives the new AMG GT S

And he loved it.

"The start-up Ka-ka-ka-BOOOOOOOOM of the new twin-turbocharged GT S coupe is, if anything, even more cacophonous than the last generation normally aspirated AMG V8s. With the exhaust flaps set to noisy, it booms and fidgets at idle and each little exploratory prod of throttle sees the revs shoot above 4000rpm and is followed by great cracks and crackles of ECU overrun fakery. Even when stationary, the GT S is more exuberant than a Porsche 911 at full-chat."

"I expected this car to be belter, but it’s actually exceeded expectations. I need to go for a pootle on the road and try the gearbox in slush mode and see what the ride is like with the dampers in pillow mode and then tell you more about the packaging and the cabin and the size of the glovebox, but right now I love the quasi-hot rod character matched against some real track ability – wrapped in a body that works outside the sports-car cliché."

"The chassis is better still. That short wheelbase brings more agility than in the Gullwing, the car turns accurately and predictably and as a driver you feel more naturally positioned within the car than in the long-nosed SLS. The standard Pilot Super Sports grip really well at the front axle and traction is really superb – better than the SLS. But what really surprised me, and what confirms all the hard work on eliminating turbo-lag is the way you can adjust the line with the throttle several times in a given turn. The car feels adjustable and playful."

"With the powertrain set to Sport Plus, the ESP in Sport mode and the dampers in the firmest position, anyone could drive the GT fast. The ESP and ABS intervention is so smooth and progressive you hardly know they’re working and you take huge liberties trail-braking into turns. The brakes, optional ceramics on the test car, are immense – no fade after four laps of Laguna. The whole powertrain is suspended on dynamic engine mounts that can stiffen when needed: you can feel them working on the track and it feels more nimble than the 1540kg kerb weight would suggest."

"And it’s a characterful motor – the volume is high, the urge is instant and the over-run crackles get louder the harder you try. It doesn’t quite have the same response as the last M156 normally aspirated AMG V8, but it counters by offering brutal mid-range and, dare I say it, an even better noise."

Countdown until Wolfinwolfsclothing says Chris Harris is an overrated idiot and a dog turd with a Porsche badge stuck in it is better than this car.

GT-S vs Porsche GTS
Interesting read!
"The Porsche is an emotional masterpiece. It combines the physique of the Carrera S with the heart of the GT3."

JUST AS I SAID. This car cant compete with a GTS let alone a GT3 or Turbo which its priced close to.

"About 250 pounds heavier than the Porsche"

I said it would be 250-300 lbs heavier.

"...the Porsche 911 GTS is the purer, more focused, and ultimately more dynamic choice."

"The chassis of the Mercedes could do with more compliance. When you’re really flying up the hill, vertical body movements occasionally throw off the handling balance, requiring ultra-quick action at the wheel. This comes as a bit of a surprise because, like the Porsche, it rarely leaves you in doubt as to its riveting road holding and the inherently fail-safe handling."

Simply put the 911 has the best suspension geometry and damping quite possibly in the history of production cars. Merc isnt there. Im sure on a road course the GTS will easily lay down better times than
the AMG GT/S.

The 911 is the benchmark for a reason and this only proves it that much more in this case. The 991 has moved the game Porsche has owned for 50 plus years that much further along.

I still wish the 911 looked a little more exotic design wise and also would change its size to smaller, lower.

I love the 911 shape. IMO it along with Aston are the best and most visually aesthetic production cars on the road. F12 also looks good in person.

I knew that the AMG GT/S wouldnt be nearly as good as even a 991S/GTS. Mercedes at its best simply isnt in the same league.

How much smaller do you want it? How much lower? Its already smaller and lighter than just about anything on the market except for other 911s, the Cayman/Boxster, Lotus' and possibly the Mclaren. Additionally, it sits almost perfectly from the factory which cant be said for many cars at all.

Something like 4.40m long and 1.20 high. Even Cayman feels big for me. MX-5 and Lotus Elis/Exige are nice, Evora is also too big. Other supercars are the size of a mid-/upper sized sedan, way too big.

I really hope the GTS will live up to all these hype. The autocar review was not that positive of the GTS comparing it to the GT3.
Anyway, I will report back when my GTS is here (3/15/2015)

I think its hard to compare to the GT3. There was so much more done to that car to make it what is it.

Seems from what I've read and heard the 991 GTS picked up right where the 997 GTS left off. Simply a masterpiece of engineering and an emotional car that performs and handles like only the 991 does.

So the statement you said below a few weeks back, you are now retracting.

No, I'm not.

Let's also biforcate between what you quoted and the fact that I did not say it. When someone says its being called the GT3 with a manual, that usually means that person didnt personally say it. Pretty commonsensical stuff here if you read it correctly. Is it the closest to a GT3 with a manual...from everything thats been said, yes.

But at the same time thats not to say it is exactly like a GT3 with a manual or else the GT3 wouldnt exists. It's hard to really compare anything to a GT3 considering its got the best dual clutch, 4 wheel steering and many things the GTS doesnt have. That doesnt take anything away from the GTS' pure brilliance.

Really glad to see the very positive reviews this car is getting. It seems to take a little from each car in the segment and put it into one car. It is gorgeous to boot.

I really want one. Can't wait to see the Black Series and GT3 versions. They should be amazing as well.

The praise continues.

"The steering is the best of any electrically assisted system today, Porsche absolutely included. The GT S’s variable assist gives me hope that digital zeros and ones will one day duplicate the experience of hydraulic power assist. The balance (47/53 percent front to rear) is also stellar. The car, so settled and smooth on back roads, allows a boatload of slip angle on the track in race mode. Trail brake or lift off the throttle, and the GT S rotates gradually from the hips."

Hmm, interesting. Earlier reports indicated MB actually choose to stick with the hydraulic rack on the GT S??
Anyway, nice car, little GTish without the rear seats. I would go with the C7 z06 if I do not need any rear seats. (or viper maybe)

It does have hydraulic steering. I have read number of magazine reviews get it wrong.

Chris Harris knows it is hydraulic.

Entering a battle with the 911 carrying a hydraulic rack is like tackling Superman with a fluorescent green rock in your pocket – a very handy advantage.
