How to track down muscle car from HS
Over the years, I have thought about my first car, a 1972 Chevy Nova, that I bought in 1999. I sold it in 2001, biggest regret, and am now looking to track it down. It was registered in Texas when I sold it and I believe the buyer was from Louisiana. I do have the VIN available and am looking for suggestions on the best way to track down the car and potentially buy it back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A friendly police officer should be able to locate the owner by VIN.

Its been 17 years since you have sold so it chances are its been through a few different owners. Easiest way would be to look up the guy you sold it to on if you still have the bill of sale for their info. Have you tried searching for it on forums? I know some of them has a lost and found section of people trying to find their cars.

The paperwork and risk of being fired if said officer gets caught might not be worth it

I think this info is available publicly from the state DMV, isn't it? But slow b/c I think you need to go state by state - even if they can't give you the name, they may be able to confirm that the VIN is still in service, vs. a crusher. If you are willing to spend some $, try calling a local private investigator to see what they can do for this - they can sometimes get scary levels of details and history for fairly cheap if it is just desktop sleuthing.
