I grew up in the City and was living there when the song was released. I was a kid into rock 'n roll at the time, but Tony really hit the bullseye with that one, and with so many others, of course.

I read somewhere a year or so ago that he'd been suffering from Alzheimer's for a few years and was pretty much not here anymore - EXCEPT when practicing and performing, when he became the Tony Bennett we knew. Apparently, the transformation was something that couldn't be explained. It was both a touching and a heartbreaking piece.

Other singers of his caliber thought quite a bit of him, too:

"Frank Sinatra, whom Mr. Bennett counted as a mentor and friend, once put it another way.

"'For my money, Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business,' he told Life magazine in 1965. “He excites me when I watch him. He moves me. He’s the singer who gets across what the composer has in mind, and probably a little more.'”
