Really sorry to hear. It’s a terrible time to get though. A lot of people without pets don’t realize how much it affects you when this time arrives.

My two boneheads, on the left is Gizmo and on the right is Jonesy. Old photo as Jonsey is now double the size of Gizmo. |

Any pet owners here have advice for dealing with an old dog who is starting to have trouble getting traction on hardwood floors? Bella is starting to slip and slide a bit. Not bad...Yet. She doesn't fall, but I've see her back leg shoot out from under her on occasion. I've heard of people putting down a runway of yoga mats. We have hardwoods throughout so I'd need about 100 of them and it would look so cluttered and ugly. I've seen boots but we tried those years ago for the salt covered slushy trails in new England. She freaked out when we put them on her. Like epic failure. At 15 I dont think this old dog is going to up to learning that new trick if she refused as a puppy.

I was visiting some friends a few weeks ago, and they have a small elderly dog that it also blind. It walks around their house, and goes in circles around a room until it finds a way out. Her rear paws were sliding out from under here on their non-carpeted floors. They have carpet runners in their walkways, which helps her to get around and also navigate by the carpet feel.....

Agree 100%. We tell our puppy people that have hardwood floors that they need to get some cheap rugs and runners to give the dogs some traction when getting up or walking around. We got some indoor/outdoor rugs from CostCo at a reasonable price. They work great for the dogs and are easy to cleanup when they make messes (or, switch over to their vomit comet personas). We make sure that there are rugs where our older dogs lay to make it easier for them to get up.

https://shop.toegrips.com/products/toegrips We used these for our border collie-lab mix and they helped. He destroyed his boots and hated them. Another thing we did that really helped was acupuncture. There aren't many vets who do it but it made a difference in so many ways. We pulled out all the stops so when it comes to senior dogs and hip/slipping issues I became very well versed in ways to aid in helping him. |

As for acupuncture....She screamed so badly they asked us not to come back. Bella has always been a bit dramatic. |
