Funfact, car sales in Norway, June 2017.
27.7% of all sold cars was actually an EV, it was the prefeered drivetrain solution, more so than dieselpowered cars, petrols and hybrids. And that's with the current offerings. A 3 series EV would do excellent i think, but i fear as JorgenM, it will only be a concept, and not be released within 18 months or so, basicly just for marketing purposes.

So let's do a quick compare between the 3-series e-drive and the Model 3
Range: BMW: 250 miles, Tesla: 215 miles Price: BMW: Buyers likely assured of the $7500 fed tax credit for the first 2 years or even longer depending on sales pace. Tesla - chance not a single (retail non-affiliated) buyer will get the credit at company's estimated sales pace. Remember, there are 10k or so orders from just Tesla/SpaceX/SolarCity employees alone who are getting priority. Style: BMW: classic 3er. Tesla - chicken egg inspired Going concern? BMW - yes. Tesla - sniff sniff, smell that cash burning?

"BMW is reportedly aiming for a range of at least 250 miles (400km) for the electric 3 Series."
250 real-world miles, or 250 miles in the nonsensical Euro NEDC cycle? 250 miles in the NEDC cycle is probably around 155 miles in the US EPA cycle. For example the 94ah i3 is rated at 186 miles in the NEDC but only 114 miles EPA. EPA is far closer to reality than NEDC in that case. Last edited by CirrusSR22; 07-11-2017 at 11:47 PM.. |

I love the 3 series. However BMW is a gasoline car company... not sure how its electric 3 series will be.
Much depends on its range, dynamics and cost. However, any EV other than a Tesla is simply a commuter car today. You can't take an EV on an road trip without supercharge level of charging... Unless BMW builds supercharging speed charging at each dealership, BMW EVs won't be competitive. I am not going to pay 60k for a purely commuter car. Also BMW tech still lags Tesla. But I would definitely consider one for daily commuting if I charge the car at home. On the other hand most people want cheap daily drivers under 20k.

Yes, the design is odd---I call mine a Pug--I really enjoy the interior and the drive--so I can't complain too much...Everything is better than a Prius!
I am almost at the point in my life where I can have a second "fun" BMW--so I am just wondering what I will get next? 2er? Next 3er? Decisons....Decisions... Quote:

True car folks appreciate cars for what they are. You don't have to hate Tesla's because your a BMW fan! I find some really good things about all my vehicles (yes, even the GMC - which is a diesel!) We use our Tesla as a daily driver. Plug it in every night. We had a Chevy volt for 4 or 5 years (ran it almost entirely on electric). We have NEVER had to use a public charger on any of our electric cars. I have gas/diesel cars for longer trips. I believe most families in the U.S. have multiple cars. You don't have to say no to electric just because it doesn't meet ALL of your possible driving needs. Its quite possible to be a 2 car family. ICE for long trips, Electric for daily driver. I completely agree about having to stop to charge the Tesla on long trips. The only way I'm going to do that is just for the fun/challenge of it. Electric works best if you can just plug it in and charge it every night. Maybe also if you had a charger at work... I think statistics indicate over 70% of electric car owners just charge them at home... The Chevy Volt (48 mi range) worked for us as an electric car since my Wife and I work together and live fairly close to the office. Cars with 250+ Mile range (like the Tesla Models) really bring this well into the daily driving requirements of many more drivers and families. BMW needs to provide this level of range to be competitive. Tesla had over 400,000 PAID ($1K) reservations for their new model 3 a YEAR before it even went on sale! 250+ miles of range can make an electric vehicle practical for many people. 500+ mile range and I might even consider using it for longer trips and stopping to charge up. Quick replacement battery packs could also make this a reality (even for vehicles with shorter ranges). There was a fleet of Taxis in Tokyo which rolled into a charging station and robotics would swap out a battery pack underneath the cars - even faster then they could fill a tank of gas! Folks don't have to dislike Electric Cars just because they currently drive a vehicle with an internal combustion engine! Unfortunately, many people appear to see this new technology somewhat of a threat... Some folks are downright hostile about electric cars!

Not a threat at all. In some ways/uses, impractical for many. I prefer hearing an engine start, rev and roar when put under pressure with my right foot (which is probably why I like but don't love my GC with it's 2L.) The aural part is a big piece of it. Quick and silent doesn't do it for me currently, even if a Tesla whips on most of the super cars in a 60mph or so sprint. I think it'll be interesting when all these electrics batteries are done; the disposal is going to be interesting to see for sure when the numbers catch up with the sales occurring.

Batteries are often re-used (as with BMW) and others almost 100% recycled (thanks to expensive materials). You won't find these on land fills...

I didn't say there would be an issue with the batteries while in service. I said when the amount of electric cars hit the end of life term for the batteries, the disposal will be not a lot of fun to handle. You can't just chuck them into the dumpster (obviously).
Here's an interesting read on the topic.. https://cleantechnica.com/2015/07/23...-can-recycled/

What? that makes absolutely zero sense. What "global fast charging infasructure" does tesla() have that BMW doesn't?? Current BMW electric/hybrids plug right into your wall. No upgrades needed. I will agree that unless charging stations become more popular in general electric cars/sales will be handcuffed. Just like when people chose a horse over a car because of lack of available fuel. |

Yeah, Tesla superchargers are very good. Just finished a road trip with my Model S. Drive for 4-5 hours, then a 30-40 mins charging stop at a supercharger with 8-20 stalls, grabbing some food and let the kids play a bit. Continue another 4-5 hours etc...
Anyway, can't wait to see what BMW present next month. Nothing that can replace my Model S, but perhaps our i3 at least if it comes with a trailer hitch and 4wd. |
