Apparently Verstappen would be a top choice for Wolff but his hands are tied too much to make a formal announcement as such.
The situation at Merc is a little complex this season with many factors playing a part but the telling thing is that Hamilton was only allowed to sign for just one year with Bottas dragging his heels about signing next year and there is some speculation that HAM will be with Scuderia Ferrari as he is the 'grandpa' in Merc.

We really don't under estimate Lewis , he is one of the best for sure.
Its more complicated due to the major advantage of the Merc car , without the Merc car he would be a single champion (his own words even) and whoever got his car would be the multiple champion, maybe even Bottas.
Having the dominant car is a bless but also a curse, he cant show his potential.
Russel showed this clearly (and the performance level of Bottas too).

Only challengers of Mercedes is Max and Vettel in an illegal Ferrari a few years ago. Even with the (not the best Renault engine) he was able to do this and outperform a very strong team mate (Ricciardo) in training and races.

For sure made the sport more attractive , that's a win for all of us.
Having a front row battle between Max and Lewis would be great , I even dont care about the end result.

I agree with your last paragraph but not the former two. Here is why:

People tend to look at the entire season and say, "Oh...well he had it easy. He's driving a rocket ship."

Let's call out a couple of instances of Lewis showing why he is the best:

Singapore 2018. A lap faster than the theoretical limits of the car. (And not the first time he's done this.)

Turkey 2020. I don't need to say anything about this.

Styrian GP 2020: Verstappen is nothing in the rain. Nothing. Anyone saying that Lewis can't show his potential doesn't know anything about F1. Sorry to be harsh. Start the video at 4:49 seconds and watch through the end.

Comparing VER to Sir Lewis isn't a reasonable comparison. Max is the most overhyped driver I've seen in my 45 years of watching F1.

Lets see this season with Perez, he had 2 team mates which aren't pancakes : Ricciardo and Sainz and both where slower in identical cars. In most races quite a lot at the finish line.

Driving in the rain you need even more a stable predictable car , for sure the red bull of last years was not. Please ask Gasly or Albon.

Still you don't here me saying he is a driving god. Above average and same level as Lewis , Senna , Schumacher etc.

Just hoping the RB en Merc are equal cars and we can see some wheel banging racing this year and quite sure its between those 2 again.

It would be nice if Lewis switched to Ferrari and battled with Leclerc. Can he do miracles in a 3rd of 4th row car?

As far as Sir Lewis goes, please cast your mind back to the 2009 season. He was in the validated 6th fastest car on the grid. With that car he garnered 4 pole positions and 2 race wins. Max has been in a top 3 car for 5 years and only has 3 pole positions. This is telling.

And as far as your rain statement goes, rain is the great equalizer. It eliminates nearly all car advantages. Lewis has won all but one rain race since 2014. I will also ask you to cast your mind back to Fuji 2007 and Silverstone 2008. Max has NO RACING PERFORMANCE similar to these.

Max is a very good driver and slightly above average. He isn't even close to Sir Lewis in performance, results, temperament and relentlessness.
