Brother moved to Stockton, left me all his gear and his boat. Going down this weekend to assess the boat's sea-worthiness

We sat there for about 30 minutes at first. After that, as soon as we could move from line to line we were pulling them up. It was a freaking BLAST.
I had a bait pole that I tried to hook a few more during that first 30, but it never came back out again. This was highly UNUSUAL though. . . |

Went out to SCI for some rockfishing and hoping for yellows. No sights of yellows. Caught all kinds of rock fishes.
It was a gorgeous weekend on the water with mirror water condition. |

I went a few weeks ago to retrieve my brother's boat from where his partner had it towed for repairs. My brother moved to Frisco. The boat yard had threatened to start charging a storage fee since no approval to do work yet. His partner arranged for the pickup, then left to Europe for 6 weeks . . .
When I got there, 3/4 tires were flat, and all four wheels were cracking at the hub. No WAY was I driving that thing down the road. The partner was complaining the engine was overheating. I sent my brother a pic of the prop, maybe 33% remaining and totally out of balance. Might explain it. $1800 estimate to get new tires/wheels, and the engine still doesn't run. I may have to charter a boat the next time I go out, or tune up my shore rod. |

Went out with Old Glory on a 1.5 days two weekends ago looking for bluefin. Got myself limit on these bad boys. First caught bft and now craving for more!
These bft were caught about 30 miles west of San Diego and they are moving up North earlier this year according to people on the boat. Should be a very good year for tuna. Going to a 2.5 days trip on the Memorial weekend. Very excited. |

Both of mine are around 80 lb and caught during the night with jig.
Other people caught the smaller models on dines during day light. |

Sold my Grady 24’ Offshore a couple years ago but fortunately I have friends with boats from 19’ walkaround to a Grady Marlin 3o’. We fish up here often in the NY Atlantic, inshore for Stripers, bluefish, fluke( summer flounder), blackfish and others and offshore for Bluefin, thresher, Mako and in the summer when the Gulf Stream eddies get close we get shots at YFT, dolphin and even marlin.
When we vacation we always plan a charter trip or two. Two years ago I caught my first Blue Marlin, after getting skunked two times in Hawaii( Kona and Maui) Landed him in Cabo, man that place is a Marlin Mecca. Hooked an approximate 600 lber but it spit the slow trolled live bonito after about a 1/2 hr. Hooked the next about about an hour later fast trolling lures. It was a 250 pounder. Can’t wait to get back to that place. Need my scratch a rooster fish off my list and another Blue Marlin while I’m at it.

Spring/summer fishing is looking great down here in Miami/Keys. The last of the sails are showing up and a mix of tuna and mahi mahi are offshore. The reefs are on fire for snapper and grouper too. Really need to nail down a date and get offshore soon - got the itch again!

To eat
1. Mahi/Dolphin/Dorado 2. Grouper 3. Cobia To catch, reverse the list above. For the Cobia bring along an I Beam and come-along.

Went charter fishing this past May in Hilton Head, SC. We go every year. Typically we get a bunch of Sharks and various smaller fish. Lost a big one last year.
This year we got something different that isn't usually found where we were fishing: |

8kg pike - this season's current highlight. Otherwise too warm to catch anything big, getting a bit chillier though. Just about to enter the pike-perch season, so fingers crossed.
Fabulous looking salmon! |

I did a lot of fishing in the Great South Bay when we had a boat in Lindenhurst, and off Sandy Hook in NJ. Although I don't like eating them, I think Blues are the most fun to catch up here, they give you a run for your money. Reeling in the fluke and flounder are like pulling up a wet rag. The strippers are fun. And the sea bass are good eating. I once pulled up a sea robin. I was horrified, I thought I found a prehistoric monster lurking at the bottom of the sea. I had freakin nightmares. I like fishing in FL because you never know what you're going to reel in. Dolphin, all different kinds of grouper, and snapper. Those grouper are a pain in the ass when they pull you into the rocks and hide. I haven't been out in years.

Once you've been on private boats, it's hard to go back to the cattle boats. That tarpon quest via fly is just a whim. I learned with my brothers and dad on a father's day outing several years ago, but little brook trout don't seem to measure up, at least to the videos. |
