And speaking of cold, here's another scan of an old one. I took this from the flight deck of the Herc I was on. This is Kodiak Alaska, during a Brim Frost exercise in 1987. As you can see, you don't land here in poor visibility. There is no go around. Once you are committed, you land or hit the mountain!

Yikes. And if the wind is coming from the opposite direction, do you land with the wind instead of into it? Is that a crossing runway or just a taxiway?
C-130's are amazing planes. They feel like they could take a serious beating and keep flying. Same with the 141. Tough planes. Not like the CH-47 Chinook, which always felt like it was about to fly apart at any minute. I hated those things.

Just ordered a 400mm f5.6L. Looking forward to some bird shots and the airshow this summer.

I'll send you any 2 for 1 fast food coupons I'm not using;-)
Wear a belt and hang it by the foot. It's kind of heavy and a neck strap doesn't do it. Of course you will still have the neck strap on also. Congratulations.

Mark, you will love the 400, it is my favorite BIF lens, especially for hand holding. (Love the kitty shot too!)
This is the dish I had for dinner tonight. The picture is from last summer, but it doesn't change This goes well with all the talk of the Mediterranean diet in the the news lately. Pan seared chicken breast with cherry tomato, olive, basil and feta in olive oil. 20120722-IMG_2487 by lennycarl08, on Flickr |

I'm coming over for dinner, Ed. Looks delicious.
I'm surprised at the listed weight of the 400 5.6. Not near as heavy as some of the other super-teles. I was looking at the specs on the sigma 120-300 f2.8 APO OS HSM. Tips the scales at 6.5lbs. Yikes.

That's a great lens. It'll suck you in and you'll be wanting a 500mm before you know it. It's Canon-crack...

Exactly.
As good as the 400mm is, the 500mm blows it away; however, you get into an entirely new weight-class and price-class. Dave

Yeah, considering it's an order of magnitude more expensive, I'd hope it would blow it away.
