I don't care if it is internal combustion if it does not come in a manual. It may as well be electric.

I’m considering a manual M3 for this reason alone before they’re gone. And I’m not even that big of a fan of manuals. But last chance to experience it, at least in a new M3.

EV’s out perform ICE in every performance metric. And EV’s are currently the worst they will ever be. The future EV M3 will fully deserve the M badge when it comes out and it will only get better

Incremental horsepower gains will be replaced with incremental range/battery gains. We stay on the treadmill either way.

shocking no?
so not the M340i or even the M440i, heck i even expected the M240i to outsell the i4
i did once drive an M3 and I4 M50 back to back at a BMW event.
and the i4 iM50i impressed me a lot more than the M3
Everyone’s entitled to their opinion even when it’s wrong. In no world is the i4 close to the M3. I drove both and own a new M3

For the next M3 keep the S58. Maybe update it alil and throw an electric motor at it to bring it to 650ish stock without increasing weight more than 200lbs

Look at the new C63 sales, not good
new C63 is not an EV.
i4 M50 is though, and it's the best selling M performance car in the line up.

per BMW USA website
0-60 bmw M3 is 4.1 (that's the one i test drove, the base model)
0-60 bmw m3 comp is 3.8

0-60 i4 M50 is 3.7

car and driver said the 1/4 mile of the m50i was 0.1s slower than M3.
and 0-60 was 0.2s quicker than the M3 comp
so not as "worlds apart" as you may think.

so i guess i agree with you "Everyone’s entitled to their opinion even when it’s wrong"

try to complete 10-20 laps on any track with I4. most m3 owners that really drive their cars don’t care about straight line numbers and M3 is not designed for drag strip. Other folks that like 0-60 comparos don’t really drive their cars. It’s ok as a data pt and nothing else.

I wonder what the successful rate will be for such engines.

I don’t mind the electric motor assist like in the majority of Supercars out there now, just don’t skimp on the main combustible engine and let the electric make up the difference for the power.

That’s talking about a turbo with an impeller also driven by an electric motor that can spin up faster and independently of exhaust pressure. Instead of batteries driving motors that drive the wheels, the batteries drive a really high speed motor hooked up to the turbo.

If you’re interested, look up Porsche’s new 911 GTS hybrid technology for what I think is the first mass produced example. Really interesting and smart stuff. Lets you have some benefits of both worlds (the fun and noise of ICE along with some benefits of EV like more or more linear power with a faster turbo spool up with much less lag)

An S58 with eTurbo would be pretty sweet as the only real downside of the engine is that little bit of turbo lag.

I believe Volvo introduced a similar tech a few years ago:

You don't buy an M car to drag race at stoplights. My X5 M50 does 0-60 in that same range. There's a ton of modern sports cars that are in the 3s 0-60. You buy an M for handling, chassis control, etc.

That said, the current M3 makes no sense in a manual IMO. At $85k with options, you can get the faster, larger, more comfortable, and cooler CT5V Blackwing for like, virtually nothing more. BMW killed it with the pricing.
