The backyard counts as part of the house, right? We bought our 1300 sq ft castle in the Vegas Valley about 7 years ago. It was built in the early 2000's and was a bit of a fixer but in a good part of town in Seven Hills.
The backyard was like most in Vegas with gravel and a few plants sprinkled around. Weeds constantly grew through the rocks. The palm trees were a maintenance nightmare as they quickly grew too tall for me to trim myself and spread their seeds everywhere. Amazingly everything you don't want to grow here flourishes but things you want to are tough to keep alive! We painted the exterior, had a slab and patio cover put in, and most recently put in artificial grass after 2 summers of struggling to keep real grass alive. The last update in the spring was to texture the block walls which made a huge difference. We kept the design simple and flat to maximize the space and utility for the kids. All in, we're loving the new space and it isn't an eyesore anymore! I took a few random angles of the yard shortly after we bought the place and replicated them today. 2013: Today: 2013: Today: The patio provides great shade, this is about 1pm. A shot of our view which faces to the west. We can see the M Resort, Raiders Practice Facility, South Point, up to the Strip and Downtown: Aside from giving the plants time to fill in, we're basically done. It isn't meant to be a forever house but we at least wanted to spruce things up a bit. Our goal was to make the space usable for us and the kids and not be an eyesore. Mission accomplished I'd say!

Our back deck got finished a couple of weeks ago. It's about 14x20.
The one good thing about lumber being so expensive, it made the decision to use Trex a no-brainer. Last edited by hooligan_G01; 07-19-2021 at 09:03 AM.. |

Yea they have 12', 16', 20', and 40'. They all come in 8' width, the larger sizes you can upgrade to 11'8" wide, but that upgrade isn't cheap either.

Question - how often do you change the air filter on the air intake for your central A/C? I have a service contract for my heat and A/C. They did the annual system check this week and told me I should change the filter every month. That seems a bit excessive to me. I just changed it in April maybe. I have baseboard heat so it’s not like I have forced air heat and it runs all year. The unit only runs in summer. I thought twice a season was more than adequate. I’m ready to change it now again as I will probably run A/C through September. Thoughts?

Just completed a deck rebuild. Just over 600 sq ft with 400 of that covered with 11' ceiling height. Composite decking and metal railings with stone columns.

A good friend installed light gray Trex on his south facing deck and had to put rugs down on it because it was unusable without wearing something on your feet when the sun is strong. He is not a fan.

We had TREX on the old deck and went with a different product this round. It's TimberTech. Any decking, including wood gets hot, but composites are a lot hotter. I can tolerate the heat way more than the maintenance of a stained deck.

Thanks Rick and lakefront. I do have the pleated filters. Service guy commented that I didn’t need to use such an expensive filter. Obviously living in NYC I run my A/C less than Rick living in FL. I think I’m doing ok changing twice during summer. No pets and good filters.

i forgot to post this here but i finished the garage the other day
here's the before: and after: i ended up moving the tool box to the right wall with part of the Husky garage cabinets next to it. I had to relocate the TireRack mount above the tool box again because that's really the only space available. the refrigerator took place of where the tool box was and one of the tall Husky garage cabinet i placed next to the refrigerator. you can see the patch marks above from covering the existing holes from the TireRack mount. i think it all turned out well. i did order a bunch of BMW/PORSCHE flags too from FlagDelivery so i'll post those once i get them in

Back in the spring, I changed out the disposables for a washable K&N filter. My DW quickly vacuums it after two weeks as a preventative, and then I wash it out in the shower two weeks later to give it a clean start for another month. I've been happy with it so far, but have not looked at the coils yet to see how much crud it is letting through. Our tiny central AC unit is a bit under-fanned for the number of vents, so we probably notice the filter getting dirty before most other people would.....
