At the NWR I was at, (Tulelake), these old telephone polls line the road along the lake, and I think they left them up on purpose as they provide perfect perches for the eagles to scope out the lake. The auto tour goes right under all these poles so you can get VERY close. We watched (slightly horrified) as a sub-adult but full sized bird swooped low over the lake and plucked a duck out of the water right in front of us. He only had the neck in its talons though and it couldn't keep its grip and dropped it back into the water. The fight was then on as about 4 other eagles swooped in trying for the prize. This guy is on one of the described perches and I shot this with my Fuji right out the jeep window.

We've got two nesting, but it's cut off access to much of our wooded area. Also, the lake is totally frozen this year, because they're not running the bubblers to keep the algae level up, so no visitor-eagles are coming in for day-fishing, like in most years, so I'm largely doing without. I get lucky occasionally and see one of the nesting pair fly by.

I'm hopeful that the fish are feasting on the algae, such that the eagles will come in to gorge when the ice melts. Fingers crossed.

Stampede Practice

Yearling bison love to run around, particularly when it's cool and there's snow on the ground. They're having a great time. Bison LOVE to run, at least when they're young.

Although up here in the North East of Scotland it gets cold at times, right here on the coast we don't usually get a lot of snow.
So I took the opportunity to get a shot of our East Beach on a beautiful (and cold) late January day.

AWESOME! being a Cali boy when I first moved to OH 6 years ago I was surprised when I saw my first eagle flying around and not in the San Diego Zoo cage! very angelic. I actually almost got a ticket from OH State Trooper cause I pulled over on the highway to watch 3 eagles sitting in a dead tree. He asked me what i'm doing and I just simply pointed to the 3 eagles. he said kindly "you can't pull over for stuff like that sir." I told him i'm from Cali and stuff like this never happens out there

I have to admit that I have a weakness for lighthouses! I was headed to Pigeon Point yesterday, but decided to stay in Santa Cruz bay since it was such a windy and stormy day.

Normally they are quite skittish, however this one is young, as you can see by the brown feathers. He/she has been perched on a fence by a lightly used road the past week or so and doesn't get spooked if you stay in the car (there was better light on this day).
