During the years 1996 to 2008, we had 13 llama crias (babies) born in Maryland and then Oregon. Like most little ones, they were adorable and a joy to watch.
Llama crias weigh 20-30 pounds at birth and, like most prey animals, the little ones stand within an hour or two and are walking and then running within days. (After all, if a predator shows up, mom and the herd are going to run and the little ones had better be able to keep up!) This is a 2024 cria born to my llama shearer in Kalama, Washington; cute! There are many fewer llama breeders in recent years. Fifteen years ago, there were many more llamas for sale at any given time. Those with sheep sometimes have a solitary llama as a herd guardian. Llamas are herd animals and when placed with a herd of other animals will adopt them as their own. A few months ago, a neighbor with sheep approached me for advice on getting a guard llama. He explained that the going price for an ordinary guard llama seemed to be a thousand dollars. I was skeptical, as it has been years since I knew the market and I told him a guard llama should be no more than a few hundred. Now I know the market has changed considerably and a non-breeder guard llama does indeed sell for a thousand or more, with a breeding female going for thousands of dollars. I suppose that's good news for the few llama farms still in operation.

I always wondered how the sheep get along with the llamas. They really don't seem to mine being around each other. The grandkids love the fact that we have the equivalent of a zoo next to us. They love the llamas the most. |
