Same bird different camera. This one was taken with the X-T2 and Fuji 100-400.

So as much as I would love a shiny new Sony A9, I just can't pull the trigger on one at the moment. I know that along with the new camera would come a few K more in glass, and I am going to have to buy a new van this new year, not to mention my TV just took a dump and that was another unplanned expense (although I got a really nice LG to replace it). That said, when I was looking at the Sony stuff, I got intrigued by their newest bridge camera, the RX10 MkIV. 24fps and a Zeiss lens with a 35mm equivalent reach of 24-600mm. Its one inch sensor sounds small, but it gets very high marks, so I cashed in a few years of amazon points and it came yesterday. Pretty impressive AF so far.

Impressive image from a "super-zoom". Would you say that the AF is superior to your Canons?

Tough to say at this point. Today was the first day I used it, but it was straight out of the box and without touching any of the settings it grabbed a bunch of keepers like the one above. I bought it mainly for my train pics, as the zoom range makes it ideal for that subject, and sensor size isn't a huge factor for railroad shots. Still, this thing seems to punch way above its weight. Taking it out again tomorrow to put it through more paces.

Well here is an example of the focus capabilities of the RX10M4. I doubt any of my Canons would have kept on this one. For me, who can't carry the big gear due to physical limitations, this bridge camera is a game changer, at least when I can't shoot from the car.

Looks every bit as good as the a9:

Juvenile Red-tail Hawk Hunts, Unsuccessfully by David Stephens, on Flickr

Those that haven't tried these shots, don't realize how hard it is with an "ordinary" DSLR, like a 1DX MkII. The Sony AF system is a game changer.

Does it have "Lock-on - Wide" point selection, along with other "Lock-on" modes? Those are simply KILLER.

I've pre-ordered an a7R III, in hopes that the AF is close to the a9.

I'm still trying to figure everything out. The manual is not the greatest. The a7RIII looks to be an amazing camera. The 42mp makes it almost like a built in teleconverter as you can shoot in crop mode and still have a big file. I'm waiting to read some hands on reports on how good AF works and how much of a lag if any the evf wiill have in burst mode.

This weekend, I spoke to an unnamed source, in Canada, that got his hands on a pre-production Sony a7R III and he said that the AF seemed as good as the a9. He's on lock-down and can't share files, or even much real information, but he's a wildlife and bird guy, so I think he'd have warned us off, if were a clunkier, in that regard.

Lots of young red squirrels around in our local woods at the moment. When they get together they seem quite aggressive, although this one quite happily sat on this branch for a minute or two.

Great shot, Alan. I've always enjoyed seeing the red squirrels on my visits to the UK.

Looks like our nesting pair had success again. I was shooting this one when the sibling burst out of the branches and took off. I hadn't even spotted it.

We had a nice display of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) last night. It showed up well even in the bright moonlight.

This shot was taken at our local West Beach, looking due north across The Moray Firth towards Wick and The Orkney Isles.
