Thank you sir! Much appreciated.
Made the strut brace switch today. This is probably the silliest thing I could've spent ~$300 on, but I like how it ties in with the overall theme. Plus it weighs like 12 ounces less than the aluminum bar... Snapped a wheel close up, too. |

I can't believe that little strut brace does anything...DId you drive it without it?
Looks great though. Did you go square or staggered on wheels? They look awesome!!!! What are the specs?

Those CF strut braces are quite rigid.

I don't expect that the bar itself makes a huge handling difference, but it contributes to overall structural rigidity which is enough for me. I've owned bendy cars in the past (DSMs) which really benefit from strut bars, but I expect it to be more incremental here. Think of it as maintaining alignment under hard cornering by fixing the tops of the struts together into one unit.
More info on the wheels earlier in the thread, but the short answer is 17x7.5 et45 Leggera HLTs, 225/45 PSS, square. Under 40lbs per wheel and tire and I'm very happy with them. The lug holes are annoyingly tight though. Last edited by squidge; 03-19-2016 at 12:12 PM.. |

Squidge is my new bay area buddy - Our cars are certainly not twins, but perhaps brothers in arms.. I'm an LCI 128i AW 6MT, black/alu interior M-Sport
My car might be rocking some shared DNA too as I picked up the shoes from him (313M's) a few weeks ago I have seen Squidge's car in person and it is gorgeous. He and I also strongly share the spiritual connection to the simplicity & heritage of the package of the N52 in an E82. Great guy & cool family I think the only other ride I could consider in their line-up right now is an S65 E92 ... the forced induction stuff drives me nuts! But I have a feeling I'm amongst friends... |

Hey thanks man, nice meeting you as well and maybe you can tag along to one of the local HPDE days if I ever decide to take the plunge. I joined the local NASA chapter and am hoping to at least do Laguna Seca this May. Hope you're enjoying the 313s!

I believe the line went down in Oct 2013.
Mine was produced on 15-6-2013. Special order, euro delivery. Oh, and it happens that date is my birthday Quote:

In the interest of keeping my build thread current, here's a few updates.
I crossed a milestone -- finally broke 10k miles. Did an HPDE at Thunderhill and had a blast. The car handled great, stopped reliably, but gave me some minor limp mode issues related to temperature once I started pushing my limits in the afternoon. I've got some work to do on increasing cooling capacity and coding out nannies, especially the calculated brake temperature one. RBF 600 held up great though. I averaged 8.5mpg at the track and used an entire tank of gas in 101 miles. I've added a base rack and Thule bike carrier and BMS CDV since my last update here. My next project is swapping in an E92 M3 FSB I just picked up. In general I'm quite happy with the state of the car and am not planning many other mods until I've put significant mileage on the car. Possibly an oil cooler. Otherwise it's pretty much driving bliss for me right now. Last edited by squidge; 06-23-2016 at 03:22 PM.. |

Looking at getting the same wheels, but in 8" once I get performance suspension and the Dinan camber plates (currently non-M-sport). Nice to see a solution for the center caps, though the lifetime on the stickers may be limited.
Good to know the Perf BBK fits, too! Great pictures!

I considered 8" width too, but given that the 235 width PSSs had the same tread width as the 225, decided to go 7.5" and minimize weight as much as possible. You're right on the sticker lifetime. Mine are holding up nicely, and they are made of a nice thick material, with a metal outer ring, but I should probably buy a spare pack.

I haven't started researching oil coolers too heavily yet, but I think the OEM setup from a 135i would probably be totally adequate for a tracked 128i. That's the filter housing, lines, and cooler. You'll definitely need it in Phoenix. I was just in Tucson a few weeks ago and man, it's just unbelievably hot out there. Last edited by squidge; 06-24-2016 at 05:18 PM.. |

I've thought about the 135 cooler as well, I wonder if it's plug and play or if there is any coding to address? Does the 135 oil filter housing bolt up to the N52 engine?

Yes, there's actually one for sale that was used on a 128i here, by user bNks334:

Yes, the filter housing is a bolt on. On the N51/52 an oil to water heat exchanger is attached to the housing such as on the 528i, on the turbo cars a block that attaches hoses going to a oil to air heat exchanger is used. I have the 528i version ready to go, but I'm thinking of getting the turbo hose block, an AN hose adapter from Turner and using an aftermarket oil cooler mounted where the turbo cars have their intercooler. My car is an N51 and I'm concerned about the radiator capacity. The radiators in N51s are Premair coated and are part of the emissions system, so I can't get a fancy large capacity radiator to deal with the extra heat from the oil if I were to use the oil to water exchanger.

I've seen pictures of the 528 oil to water HE and like that option as well. So, with the N52 engine will the 528 cooler work? I assume both styles of cooler have an integrated thermostat - there isn't any software to mess with?
Is there a difference or concern with the radiator capacity of the N51 vs the N52 (I have the N52)? Last edited by KNS; 06-24-2016 at 09:59 PM.. |
