Sweet this brought back memories. I grew up in a muscle car family (Mopars, Pontiacs, etc) and was dreaming of the WS6 Trans Ams during this era while I was in high school. My good friend was a mechanic at a Mercedes dealership and the used lot got one of these in, less than a year old. He talked about it for a few days then one day at lunch he showed up in it and said he took the key while sales staff wasn't looking and we had to go quick. It was this color but didn't have that terrible wood grain. We went for a spirited drive on the freeway and he got into trouble when he got back but it turned me.
That car made me decide BMWs were awesome. When I finished schooling 10 years later and could afford nice new cars, Pontiac was gone but BMW was there and I've owned one ever since.

I've never understood the point of buying a car and not driving it. Kinda like buying a trophy wife and never sleeping with her...

This car sold at an RM auction along with a 2000 model with about 1900 miles back in 2010.

FWIW, EAG sold a 390 (?) mile E39 M5 for $149k about 18 months ago. I seriously doubt anyone that is bidding on this car is worried about a gasket leak or has any intention of actually driving very far.

Pricing on E39 M5s has been growing very strongly for well-kept cars. I owned my 2001 for over 14 years and recently sold it at 66k miles on BaT for $34k ($35,700 buyer cost). My car was garaged 24/7 since new, almost never in rain, never in bad weather, and driven only ~1200 miles/year for the past 10 years. I never experienced all these internet horror stories about cars that aren't driven "enough."

It was a fantastic car that when driven was exercised "fully and completely" after a careful warmup. One of the best memories was trying to catch my daughter on track at NCCAR about 10 years ago; I was in her E46 and she was driving the M5. The wail of the Dinan exhaust from the M5 and it's lowered stance as it pulled away strongly on the straights was incredible.

Out of all the BMWs I've owned and then sold over the last 40+ years, the E39 M5 and my 1972 Bavaria go down as my favorites.
EAG are straight up criminals. Redic pricing which is fucking up the market

This is was when BMW was GREAT. Now it puts the M badge on any model to boost sales. Sad

This kind of logic is accomplished and encouraged by people with no depth. Materialism and consumerist mentality with no understanding about how objects interface with our lives. OUR lives. These people forget that their grave won't hold their material objects.

People who truly love cars drive them and live their lives. People who loathe life store things and save them for a day which never arrives...

This foolish movement is running rampant throughout 1M owners currently. "It's too valuable to drive". It's like buying a full 10 course dinner at a world famous restaurant and deciding "it's too nice to eat". Meanwhile they will all sell their cars after owning them for years without even driving them...a fruitless exercise of being owned by a car instead of owning a car.

Modern car culture is deteriorating by the day. Between people buying cars for "ring times" vs. spending more on detailing supplies than gasoline and driving vs. people saving their $60k cars for 20 years to sell it for $90k because it has 2k miles after years of neglect. We shouldn't be celebrating this sort of odd materialist celibacy.

Excellent post. Recently while my E90 was down for a few months due to a deer hit, my Z4 when into full time DD duty (180-miles/day). I bought the Z4 in December 2014 with low miles for an 8-year old car at 23,000. The Z4 was bought to lightly fill in for the E90 when repairs were necessary, as was the case recently. I racked up 10,000 miles on the Z4 pretty quick, which was making my anus restrict a bit I have to say, but I kept reminding myself I actually bought the Z4 to drive it.

Trying to preserve an E39 M5 is a waste of time. And if you buy it with 500 miles on it for $150K then you are a dork. If the idea is that it was a favorite car at the time you couldn't afford it, then buying it now, way over-priced, to start driving it and really take a massive depreciation hit, is even more stupid IMO.

They were so proud to post up an invoice for a 07 Z4 M that was a little over $11k.

Some people have lots of money and not a lot of smarts. I know a guy that bought a Bloomington gold rated low mileage sought after vette. I forgot what year, as I have never been a vette follower. He proceeded to drive it regularly and shortly realized that it was not as comfortable as a modern car, so he sold it the following year. That cost him about $40k to drive that car that summer.

His mistake was to drive it. This car is going to be sitting in a gallery, not driven. I think a lot of people are missing the point. The buyer probably has a stable of cars. This is not going to be a car that he/she uses, and therefor it should not be compared against a modern car that can be driven. A modern car will depreciate. This car will appreciate. When they say a car is not an investment, they don't mean this type of car.
