Must have given Chewy one heck of a line to get him to do that. Then again, how long have him and Badger been going out?

haven't you guys seen Take Him to the Greek?

my comment was based on that movie... not some potentially crazy fantasy going on in your heads.

yeah its a picture i took near the 3rd st bridge in LA. The picture has good qualities about it.

Is it against the rules to post the same picture in two different categories?

I know I'm not going to have a chance to shoot something new before the deadline, so here is a photo I took over the 4th of July weekend.

rodi has a good point...i mean, we can all take cool pictures of lines, but lines leading to the sky (in the case of buildings) or lines leading to more lines...is that really the point of the contest? because if such is the case, it seems to me that the contest should be called lines, and not leading lines.

if you want it to be technical, a leading line is anything that draws your eyes through a photograph (basically from one end to the other) or to a specific subject (point a to point b). I personally don't believe they need to be straight or even that obvious. For example row of trees on a point out into the ocean can easily be a leading line into the horizon. The trees don't have to be in a perfect straight line to lead your eyes, they would however need to have some sort of vanishing point or something where they went from larger to smaller.

And along those lines (sorry, couldn't resist), rodi's pic is really not a leading lines pic because the first thing that grabs your eye there is the model who is the subject of the image. If she were standing much further back in the image, I could see the leading lines connection. But the lines in that pic merely frame the subject. Rodi's earlier image of The Salk with the birds way in the distance is much more a leading lines type image.

i'm with you there, i'm just failing to see the subject in some of these, you know? the lines seem to be the subject.

in agreement there... however I don't see whats wrong with the lines themselves being the subject if there is in fact a subject. I mean every photo has a subject, whether the lines are a part of it, natural or implied, the lines lead you to the core subject or the lines themselves are part of a bigger subject... i guess we just have to hope that the votes go to the right photos.

i guess my point is that something like this:

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...5g7nbEFW-Cr9Lg

where is the subject? Well the lines and shapes become the subject and that is what makes it a strong photo.

Yes, as Badger said, it's lines leading the eyes. Many times the lines lead to infinity, sometimes they lead to a woman's crotch, but they're still leading lines.

Just to be clear and make sure everyone understands this theme:

Definition: Leading lines are lines within an image that leads the eye to another point in the image, or occasionally, out of the image. Anything with a definite line can be a leading line. Fences, bridges, even a shoreline can lead the eye.

Once again our fun little contest threatens to devolve into a noxious haze of technicalities...

As far as I'm concerned every one of our contest's themes is nothing more than an excuse to think in a particular way about photography, and then let that inspiration work as it will. Arguments about all the minutiae of what qualifies and what does not tend to drain the fun out real fast.
