Playing Baylands this Friday....haven't played there in a while but should be a nice relaxing round.

I brought my 10 and 8 year old boys to the driving range last Friday for the first time. There was a little reluctance on their part but after hitting a few balls they were completely in love with golfing. It really warmed my heart. My first trip to the range was when I was 9 so pretty cool they did it at about the same age. Many more practice trips to go and then we will hit a small executive course.

Playing 36 holes tomorrow with my son at a premier course. Looking forward to it. I will probably be a tired, broken version of my former self after the ordeal!

Will try to stick with the "feet planted" McIlroy swing as much as possible. To my way of thinking, feet planted removes variables from the swing equation - a good thing.

Difference between you and I is you know what putter is in your bag. I have "a few" and change it regularly.

Hahaha. Welcome to our little corner of BP.

My current bag is pretty much just all PXG except Callaway Jaws wedges. Been debating on switching to TaylorMade P790s but not sure yet. Also don’t know what else is out there that I might like.

8.1 handicap at the moment and can hit my 7i about 195-200y for reference. Working on easing off and hitting it 185-190 with better accuracy type of shots. 3/4 swing, shaping draws and fades, etc.Haven’t quite gotten the hang of it consistently or accurately yet, but I can get out from behind or under a tree pretty well…

Holy shit. 195-200 7i? Yikes. I figure I hit mine 160-170 and I'm off a 5.1 handicap right now. BUT I am getting older (been on social security a few years now) and having physical issues. But I hit it really straight.

Also in fairness to handicap my home course is pretty easy.

36 holes yesterday - great time with my son. Weather was great - not too warm, and clouds made it comfortable, plus some breeze now and then. The courses were in great condition, so the only variable was....the golfers!

I am keeping my new "McIlroy" swing with both feet planted. I learned golf a long time ago and lifted the left heel in the backswing (I am a right-handed golfer). My putting is gradually getting better over the years - it's not great but there have been slow improvements. Short iron game is OK - similar with putting, I think it is because I am taking more time and not trying to hit for maximum yardage with every swing.

Equipment-wise I am satisfied with my clubs for now. Old forged cavity-back irons are doing just fine and I have some Nike SQ woods which I hit pretty well. The putter is a gift from my brother from decades ago so I am sticking with it. Maybe a new set of woods in a couple of years. I am going to have my clubs re-gripped this winter because it is long overdue. I am a fan of corded grips.

To be clear, I am not at the level of some posters on this thread; I golf fewer than 6 times per year and my score reflects this. I do enjoy golf quite a bit.

Tonight son and I are playing twilight with wife and daughter after dinner - hoping to get 9 holes in before it's too dark.

I love seeing what others are hitting for clubs, how they hit certain clubs, and average scores. Good to see the same challenges I face others are facing as well.

Last season I picked up new Ping irons. My bag has the following:

Driver: Ping G30
3 wood: Ping G
3 and 4 iron hybrid: Ping G30
5i through SW: Ping 425's
Putter: Odyssey Rossie

I don't formally track my handicap but my average round I usually shoot between 80 and 84 on a par 72 6500 yard course. Back in my teenage years when all I did was golf I peaked at a 3-4 handicap.

My typical round I usually get like a 42 to 44 on the front nine, and then 38 to 40 on the back nine. I should just play 27 holes and use the first 9 holes as a warm-up and might start to see sub 80's again.

Former baseball player here...I built my swing off of remembering my baseball coach yelling at me for swinging at low pitches. "Quit swinging at that low shit! We ain't golfing out here!!!"

But I've also been playing since like...6th or 7th grade, off and on. Only really got serious again the last few years with the pandemic.

I'd like to get down under a 5 and start competing in the NCGA tournaments. If anyone else is in the bay area and wants to play a round, hit me up!

I hit a 7 iron about the same as you, but a few weeks ago I slowed down the swing a bit for accuracy and shaping. Basically hitting 1 club extra from what I used to hit. It’s made a big difference as I’m now hitting close to 60% GIR.
Handicap is a 5.2.

My bag is now:

TaylorMade M1 Driver (2017 version)
TaylorMade V-steel 3 wood
TaylorMade P770 4-PW
TaylorMade MG3 52°, 56° & 60°
Ping Eye 2 62° (what I use out of bunkers)
TaylorMade Spider EX putter
Balls - Titleist Pro V1x or AVX depending on the day

Been contemplating replacing the driver but can’t bring myself to spend $800+ Canadian $ to not really gain much in distance or accuracy. I average about 275 with the M1 and I’ve hit all the new drivers with the exception of the new Titleist TSRs, nothing made me want to empty my wallet.

I would have been a professional baseball player except..... talent. I had none.

I was a member of NCGA when I lived in Santa Clara. Played with a group called Rolmex. Bunch of former employees of Rolm. I truly sucked as a golfer then. I started playing at age 32 and really didn't have much time to work on it since I was working for a startup which really didn't think having a life was part of the deal. Now, I have the benefit of being retired for the last 25 years and playing a LOT of golf and getting lessons. it helps.

Since we are all sharing whats in the bag:

Titleist TSR3 Driver (new and I love it)
Ping (not sure) 3-5 woods (all the Ping stuff is over 10 years old)
Ping (again forget) 3-4 iron rescue
5-W PXG I think generation 3
50-56 degree wedges Cleveland RTX Zipcore (wearing out and need new)
Putter varies. Lately a Odyssey 2 ball putter
Ball - Vice Pro (lime green cause I like green)

St. Andrews

Augusta

Pebble (played twice so far)

Manele / Kapalua / Nanea (Hawaii)

5th spot TBD, there are TONS I'd love to play ranging from Edgewood in Tahoe to The Institution to random ones people have posted online out in Minnesota, Montana, Colorado, Arizona, New York, etc. Let alone courses all over Europe.

How can I forget about Augusta National? That is actually my #1 bucket list course. Walked it but never played it.

Yeah. I got to attend a Masters once but have no delusions I will ever play it.

I have played some of the course on others bucket lists such as Pebble, Monterrey Peninsula Country Club, Spyglass, Kapalua, Siam Country Club, Estancia, and I forget what else. I've been lucky. Still want to visit Scotland and play some of the "auld courses" over there, if only they had a summer.

Played Old Course 2x, New Course, Jubilee, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns in 2019. Was lucky enough to get in the lottery for The Old Course and lined up at 12 midnight for the second round. So much history!
Carnoustie was difficult as expected. Kingsbarns is like the Pebble Beach of Scotland and a definite must play.

Forgot to report back. About a month ago I was playing 9 holes with my wife and some friends and pretty much had the best 9 holes ever in my life. Seemed like everything was clicking.

Played last night with my wife's dad and her younger brother and my drives were spot on. Driving over 250-270 yards decently straight. Irons were good but the short game with the wedges are a still work in progress. Beautiful evening for it too.

Can't wait for my work golf league to start back up next April. Going to be a long winter. lol.
