I see quite a few older folks messing with cell phones while driving. 30-40 year old Soccer moms and contractors in pick-up trucks are probably the worst I've observed...
30 and 40-year-olds are older folks that's fucking hilarious.

Truck drivers have manual transmissions and also fall asleep and crash every year. In either case a bad human decision is made - driving while watching a movie and relying on tech that has not been proven to work vs. driving when too tired to be driving, putting others at risk. In both cases it is human decision making at fault.

Pro tip: the correct phrase is "couldn't care less." And for those who are reading and writing impaired, there's a video so you can listen and don't have to try to read it at all: https://www.merriam-webster.com/vide...ldnt-care-less

(For the impatient, the payoff is at 2:00.)

And my day is going just fine. And for the record, I avoid assholes as clients. They're also usually the ones who don't listen to advice and don't pay their bills.

Older is a comparative adjective, not a superlative one, no? English is not my primary language, but do remember as much from school.

30-40 year old folks are OLDER that 20 year old folks

I am 46 BTW...

Robust cables would have prevented the accident altogether. While I enjoy reading about Darwin Award winners, for doing truly stupid things, I don't believe this woman deserved the death penalty for a mistake that's made all the time. When a mistake is made all the time you design to make sure the mistake isn't fatal. True, here, it wasn't fatal, but it often would be.

The cables were flimsy and didn't perform as they should have. Blame the woman, but blame the garage operator (and builder) as well for a poor, unsafe design.
This may very well be true, but only forensic data and not perception can bear that out. I say this because subjective perception may be incorrect; a few years ago, if you compared a carbon-fiber component with its steel counterpart, the uninformed would perceive the CF to be the inferior of the 2; i.e. light-weight and thin CF = "flimsy" (bad) versus heavy-weight and thick steel = strong (good).

If the barrier cable was engineered to withstand an ingress parking bay speed of S for a vehicle carrying a max weight of W and that falls within regulatory spec, then I don't see how she'll successfully litigate against any combination of architect, builder, parking lot operator and anyone else in that construction supply chain; unless some Bernie Madoff type entity knowingly and deceitfully supplied sub-standard materials; but she'd need to prove that and it would cost her a ton to do so. Even in seemingly benign driving situations like parking bay entry; the onus is on the driver to be defensively vigilant, retain control and to rectify bad decisions in split-seconds.

We've all screwed up while driving; most of us get away with it without damage to life, limb or property, but hopefully reach the point of realization that we acknowledge having more luck than brains in the past; I know I do.

In the recent past, I drove a 428i Convertible loaner; the little 2.0L i4 has surprisingly sweet bottom-end torque starting at 1,250 RPM, braked and handled well. I was impressed. Maybe BMW’s 360 degree cam and automation technology will prevent this in the future, where the car ignores driver acceleration input and applies the brakes to prevent shooting off the 7th floor. But even then, I’m sure many will blame others first, as we’ve evolved into a spoilt, self-indulgent and distracted generation.

This was the second accident of this type within a short period of time at this garage. And after this accident the City of Austin apparently woke up and cited the garage for unsafe operations. So the cable will not be tested in situ; it will be replaced.

I do agree with your comment about everyone making mistakes. If we're lucky, our mistakes are not fatal and we live to make more in the future.

I'd like to file a lawsuit to make sure people like her who don't know which pedal is which ever get behind a wheel. Smh.

Music to a lawyer's ears. But if you sue everyone who makes a mistake in a car, you'll make the lawyer representing you exceedingly rich. (And you'll lose all the cases for lack of standing.)

We're human beings. We make mistakes. We're not perfect. The only perfect human being who never made a mistake was crucified by imperfect, mistake prone human beings.

Yeah, I worked it out to about 40mph myself, but had the opposite reaction, surprised it was so tame. I figure collisions at that speed are fairly common. Not a parking lot fender bender common by any means, but a head-on collision in a residential area with a 20-25mph speed limit would be on the same order. Or hitting a stationary object on an average boulevard.

She was probably parked forward in the parking, because the front of the car hit first the floor, flipped and landed on the top ...so considering that, she probably engaged the car in drive, then she realized that she was not going back, so when she feels that the car was going in the wrong direction, she hit the accelerator instead of the break...that is the only explanation...

Some people don't deserve to be driving ???? lack of awareness if you can't tell the difference of the pressure of a gas vs brake pedal.

I am glad she is ok, but how does one mistake the two pedals?! I mean unless you are a new driver.... ahh! Could have been much worse.
