Ponoka RCMP said in a Thursday news release police received a call about a 2019 Tesla Model S travelling at more than 140 km/h south on Highway 2 near the town around 4 p.m. on July 9. Police said the car appeared to be self-driving with both front seats reclined all the way back and the driver and passenger were asleep.

Police said when an officer turned on the cruiser’s emergency lights, the Tesla accelerated to 150 km/h.

When police received the complaint about the speeding car it initiallyappeared to be driving itself with no one inside.

“Sure enough, a short time later the Tesla goes by. The officer was sitting in the centre median and he too was like, ‘Noooo,”‘ said RCMP Sgt. Darrin Turnbull. “He couldn’t see anybody in the vehicle.

“He gets up closer to the vehicle and hits the siren, and it’s at that point he can see the driver pop up and pull over,” Turnbull said.

“We can’t say whether he was sleeping or not, or whether he was just reclined back.”

After being pulled over, the driver was charged with speeding and handed a 24-hour licence suspension for fatigue. He was later charged with dangerous driving.

“Although manufacturers of new vehicles have built-in safeguards to prevent drivers from taking advantage of the new safety systems in vehicles, those systems are just that supplemental safety systems,” RCMP traffic services Supt. Gary Graham said in the release. “They are not self-driving systems, they still come with the responsibility of driving.”

The driver is scheduled to appear in court in December.

According to Tesla’s website, the autopilot feature allows for the car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane but still requires the driver to be paying attention.

Autonomous cars are in their early stages in much of Canada, with Ontario and Quebec approving pilot projects as long as a vigilant driver is present to take control of the vehicle when needed.

There have not been any reported self-driving car crashes in Canada, but several have been reported in the U.S.

“It’s definitely a new thing, which unfortunately we might see more often,” said Turnbull.

Ponoka is more than 100 kilometres south of Edmonton.

bmw has agreed to target cuts in carbon emissions in europe. If ot doesn't attain this it pays heavy fines. The mild hybrid just helps with that trickery. Financial decisions from bmw to satisfy regs and for customers to pay low tax.

yeah, and so has everyone else!

Here are the engine choices for the Range Rover Sport (the best off-road SUV you can buy) which include BOTH an MHEV and PHEV!



Just kinda bizarre to see electric tech slowly but surely invading every line of every manufacturer.

The choice isn't going to be BEV vs ICE:
It'll be a spectrum of options, migrating into full BEV by decade's end or earlier.

Oh hi y'all, I've been wondering where everyone went.

So, I'm looking at the brand new posts and thinking that it's all pretty shallow. Looking at valuations, legacy car manufacturers, tax breaks.

Watch the drone videos Tesla fanboys are making of the construction in Shanghai, Berlin and Austin. Look at the facilities a month ago, then a week later, then a week later etc. This is not normal.

Yeah, panel gaps. Whatever.

Things like this will likely delay transitions somewhat - the consumer tipping will begin when the next "it" road/track car is electric

Ya, I'm not so sure. New cars markets needs a used car market and hybrid vehicles are already becoming too complex for the shade tree mechanic. Never mind that automakers (cough, cough Tesla, BMW) are fighting over the "right to repair". As a result I fully expect an acceleration towards disposal of subscription BEV just because the second/third owner can't repair them.

This is exactly the reason to use services like realcar.nyc/rent-a-porsche-cayenne car rent etc.

I was surprised just how.... normal... it was. Nothing blatantly obvious with build quality, all the materials seemed like nice quality, there isn't much in the interior, but the materials that are there are on par or better quality than your average 3 series. I personally find the white pleather really nice, better than the pleather BMW was putting in their cars when I had my 1 series. That shit was like rubber.

My car has no rattles and everything feels nice and tight. That being said I don't think I have ever had a car (including BMWs) that didn't have a rattle, somewhere at some point. Now if you are anal retentive I'm sure you will notice some of the body panel gaps are larger than they should, some are not 100% even, but nothing any normal person would notice.

Plus Tesla has been doing this for what... like 12 years? How long have the other manufacturers been at this... a century? Now if you want to talk about Tesla service or their buying experience or their software policies.... then I'm all in favor of calling them out on that!

Good for you for the price they charge it better be rattle free for you.
my mates model s was £79000. sitting inside it was no different from vauxhall and citroen taxis bar the vegan leather and acceleration.
For similar money one could do so much better...
