Purpose
CONELRAD was designed to broadcast civil defense information to the public using radio stations. The system was intended to make the broadcasts difficult for Soviet bombers to home in on by rapidly switching transmitter stations.
Operation
CONELRAD was operational from 1951 to 1963. All commercial AM radios sold in the United States during this time were required to have the CONELRAD frequencies of 640 and 1240 kHz marked on their tuning dials.
