I live in Vancouver, which is the EV Capital of North America and has been for 2 years.
Teslas especially and every other EV Brand are everywhere. https://www.langaravoice.ca/b-c-lead...electric-cars/ When I ask people I know why they bought a Tesla, I get the normal, quiet, cheap to operate, good tech. When I ask the question how was the buying experience the cheering starts. No salesperson, I just ordered it online. They just took me out to a demo car and said enjoy your drive, The Tesla staff person didn't come with us. The price is the price, no haggling. I was treated as a valued client (I hear that from all my pal's wives) When you consider Elon's limited social skills it becomes clear that he was the only person who could ever change the car buying experience. He would have struggled more than most with the tradional car buying horror show we all experience. He just decided people would be buying his cars differently. |

Elon has 11 or 12 children. I'm going with he has decent social skills. Just sayin'.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Pay close attention to what Ms. Barra says in this piece regarding customer choice. Also, CBS states EV sales are up all over the world except in the US... It aired yesterday. https://www.cbs.com/shows/video/uFIy...ka_MivcXPiw8C/ Last edited by Efthreeoh; 09-23-2024 at 12:40 PM.. |

Lithium battery fire closes the Port of Montreal. The whole area was put into lockdown. National Post article asks some good questions.

Depreciation is the reason I would not BUY an EV...battery (and other) technology is moving so fast that it would be easy for obsolescence to set in on models produced just a year ago. I think an EV may make sense for those that stay in a relatively limited area and have charging available locally, especially at the workplace and home. Leasing an EV makes no real sense either depending on what you buy but generally in the short lease period you won't save $ on fuel enough to cover the incremental cost of the EV vs ICE.
When I rented a Tesla on vacation, it wasn't a great experience. The hotel had slow and limited charging so every day we needed to plan our day to include charging stops or going to specific stores or restaurants that had nearby charging. Then returning the vehicle with a full charge is near impossible unless you plan plenty of time to charge near the return locale. When I rented it from Hertz, it said no charge if >10% charge but when I returned it I found out there were conditions on that. I don't recall what they were but it was like only when the moon is full and Venus is in retrograde or some shit. Rather than saving me money, I spent more than I would have on fuel plus the hassles. Very glad I rented one before I decided to buy/lease one. I also feel like what goes into making and the disposal of batteries is just as bad for the environment, if not worse, than pollution etc. from ICE's. My perception anyway.

There are some downsides to using 90% of cars as track cars, including most BMWs. |

EV's would make for a terrible rental, unless like you said, you really don't plan on driving very far. Renting a car in Hawaii, okay, maybe it works, but not really. Terrible business model to even offer an EV to anyone as a rental. You're in a location you don't know with unknown charging. Maybe have them available for people who already have an EV and know the nuances of dealing with them? The life cycle analyses done between ICE and EV take into consideration battery production and recycling. |
