There are plenty of companies out there that you have been able to work your way up without a degree, that now require a degree to get into those management positions regardless of experience. And starting out at 70k with a degree isnt bad either.

They would rather hire someone with 5+ years of experience in the sales field. I have to pay $5k a semester out of pocket for college. It seems like a lot. Maybe down the road, it'll benefit me. |

F no
I have to pay $5k outa pocket each semester for it not including books and other fees. Plus I have to take out a loan. I don't recall the amount. I have to pay to do something I don't want to. When I graduated high school in 2016. I planned on majoring in Marketing. My dad had a convo with his friend and his friends like he shouldn't do marketing because employers will only hire white folks. Um, that's racist. So my pops told me to try out Mechanical Engineering courses since I am into cars. I took a few courses but when it came time to take the harder level math and science courses I couldn't pass them for shit. I took tutoring lessons and everything. Nada kept failing. Finally, I decided to shift back into the business world and finished up my associate's degree in 4 years... I paid for my associate's degree too. But that was community college so not to bad. At this point, I'm somewhat tired of school. Last edited by Mosaud1998; 07-28-2021 at 04:35 PM.. |

I have a few questions:
-Why not community college? (cheaper and still a degree) -Do you have any idea what GM's generally make? -Do you want to stay in the same area of Illinois that you're in or do you want to get out of that corrupt, pothole filled, tax ridden state? |

If the goal is GM at a dealership, there's only so many jobs available in your area. Their pay isn't always a ton either - 90% are covered by $130k per year. The average for certain IT engineering specialists (>4 years experience) in most of the larger metropolitan areas is the same and requires less "luck" to get those jobs.
A better way to look if your salary is good enough is how much your able to save at the end of the year. You've got plenty of potential at the moment. Buying a home should be a priority unless you plane to move far away in the near future. In my opinion, any money you plan on investing should instead be going toward paying off debt like a mortgage. Much safer "returns" that way.

being older than you, i have several buddies that are now doing night school because they need that degree to get to the next level. At companies where they had worked their way to the top, just to find out that the new corporate direction was to have college grads at the top. Its shitty, but it is what it is.

not to rain on your parade, it's ok and better than most 23 year olds
I pay high school graduates $25 an hour, 10 hour ot a week on average, company van, gas card, GREAT benefits, weekends off That's $71,500 a year to turn a screwdriver/wrench Pass a background check, pass a drug test We just hired a bunch or warehouse guys too... $24 an hour to start, and because of the labor market, all the hours you want right now. Someone willing to work could easily make $90K with OT. Don't even need to graduate high school for that one. Just pass the background check and be willing to work hard |
