I have a 2010 WRX. Picking up a 2011 X3 35i. The insurance on the WRX is $500 a year more than the WRX.

As for WRX/STI vs 328, I would take the Subie. The BMW is more classy but with the AWD and power the WRX is more fun.

I have a 2011 Subaru STi and I also have an 08 M3. The Sti is absolutely an amazing ride. The STi makes me forget about how fun my M3 is sometimes. It handles very comparable to the m3. Only problem is insurance is definitely a ton! I pay 520 ever 6 months for my M3. The STi runs me 1100 for 6 months. Same insurance company Allstate platinum plan.

If you do end up getting an STi i suggest you Cobb AP it fast because the stock tune is very lean and will later cause ring-land issues

The cobb AP is night and day. The car drives a lot smoother and pulls harder all the way up to 4th gear. MPG on the highway did increase a little but nothing to major.
