Man, I am just happy to read you're punching this thing straight in the gut. I know it hasn't been easy and reading about your journey really puts into perspective some of the things I take for granted.
I appreciate your candidness and want you to know that you've got my support from California to whip this thing into submission.

I was just going to check in on you today - happy to see a cheerful and appreciative update from you Hubba! You also have set yourself goals, which is the way to do it when you're committed to getting better sooner.
I've been thinking of you, as I'm sure many others here - keep up your spirits so that soon you can be enjoying some spirits! :-) |

Speaking of spirits, today in occupational therapy we went to the kitchen to go through how to deal with fridge, stove, etc from a chair. They had the same type of fridge as we do at home with a freezer drawer on the bottom. Therapist laughed out loud when I told her I could reach my big cubes for my Rye. Thanks again for the concern! |

I did this shortened version in one take but hopefully it's passable and that you can draw some kinda inspiration from the lyrics. Wishing you the BEST and that everyone can Fix You, the only song I like from Coldplay.

Hi all. Update time. As you know, I had been cruising through therapy and making great progress. Maybe too great. It has been a rough week. Sunday night I had a severe onset of inflammation in my upper body. Neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers all decided to revolt against me for working them so hard. I was, for all intents and purposes, now paralyzed in the legs and my upper body as well. It hurt like a SOB. X-rays, ultrasounds, bloodwork, and an aspiration of my right ankle led them to believe it is gout. (Even though my Uric acid level was only 3.6, which is probably better than it has been in a very long time.). They started a course of meds to a little benefit, but not to a pace that made anyone happy. Including me. Thursday morning I started a 7 day steroid treatment. Friday morning I finally had a little relief, and today I feel sort of human again. I was supposed to go home this coming Wednesday, but that is now postponed until the following Wednesday, 3/13. Although I was still able to work my legs in very light PT, it certainly wasn’t anything close to what I was doing. No standing at all, not even close. I have 45 minutes of pt tomorrow, and I feel like standing is going to happen. If so, a couple steps by the end of the week is still on the table, and my original schedule will be exactly 1 week behind. I gotta say, I’m beginning to go a little bonkers in here, and this whole thing this week has been a real kick in the nuts. 7 weeks in here, and hell or high water, on 3/13 I’ve got to make going home happen. I appreciate all of you that have chimed in and sent well wishes! Thank you!

Sorry to hear about the setback. I’m sure it was frustrating right before you were scheduled to go home, but if it had to happen, maybe better last week than after getting home. Glad to hear steroid helped and nudged everything overall back towards on track. Sucks to stay an extra week at the end of a long stay but hopefully the next 10 days are a 180 turnaround, this temporary setback will be in the rear view mirror as you get ready to go home.

Hey Huba,
I was saddened to read about your setback, but your attitude remains strong and positive and those are key to any kind of recovery. I hope you don't experience any more setbacks, and are home very soon. |

Thanks guys! So this is not a diet I would recommend to anyone, but I’m down 40 pounds in 6 weeks.
As expected, I did stand on Saturday. I have had a great start to this week, and today was probably my best PT session since I’ve been here. I have taken heed to my 99 year old grandmother’s wise words: “Don’t overdo it”. Where before I would use shoulders and arms to make up for my lack of speed in mobility, I am now taking my time and pushing everything through my legs. Why was I rushing so before? Who did I have to impress? It’s proven to be a good strategy. Lesson learned, thanks gramma! I hope you are all well! |

Good news Hubba, glad to hear it. I guess less is more in your case. I don't mean the weight, I'm talking about the PT. Listen to Gramma! She sounds smart.
Still shooting for 3/13? I lost 20 lbs when I was in the hospital for 11 days. I didn't need to lose it. If you did I guess it's good, then. Have the family bring in some food you like. I didn't do that and I wish I did. The guy in the bed next to me had his son bring in turkey sandwiches. Last edited by Esteban; 03-05-2024 at 11:29 PM.. |

Yes, still shooting for 3/13.
Yes, I had the 40 to spare, and could honestly go another 20 without looking too thin. I’ve always been a bigger guy, but I carry it well. Mrs H won’t be able to keep her hands off me! |
