Even a 10-stop filter will overexpose because it's still an even light value across the frame. You would need a good grad filter to handle that exposure from the right side. Probably something like a Lee filter that you could move up and down.

Still a damn nice image. Loads of detail in the rocks.

Mark, why would it overexpose, as long as you correctly compensate for it in-camera?

I think that he made the right choice, to expose for the shadow of the rock. Sun sparkle on water really doesn't bother me and I would have left that there; however, I would have probably done this as HDR to get the sky darker. Either that, or composite the sky in OR bring the sky level way down in PS layers.

Putting a GND on the side is asking for trouble, IMHO. I might have tried my polarizing filter here.

A solid filter leaves the same ratio of light across the frame. Exposing for the shadows still leaves the bright areas over-exposed. You need to reduce exposure in one area while leaving other areas alone. Hence a GND.

True, it can really show up in the image if you're not careful. I have a B&W GND that has so little effect that I rarely use it. In this image the sun is so bright that you'd need a seriously high-stop filter and that would make it very difficult to smooth the falloff across the frame. I agree in this situation a second shot exposing for sky only would have been useful.

oh and nice shot mario. I think the overexposed part could not be reduced unless he took an HDR.. one shot for the rocks one in between and one for the sky, then combine. I like it better like this, its more natural..

Very bright, the filter is a B+W 110 ND 3.0

This is another view of my "tones in grayscale" entry, only this time in the original color. As you can see, there's not a whole lot of difference. A study in grays, only in shades of blue and green.
