The high-spec luxury Porsche Taycan car appeared to have ignited just outside the dealership. The fire quickly and spectacularly engulfed the car.

Afterwards, it was revealed that the car had previously cost its owner ฿10 million.
An analysis of EV car fire incidents by EV FireSafe published in April 2024 is informative. (intersting data not often published)
Significantly, it showed that 22.5% of EV fires were caused by collisions or impact with road debris. After that, the key problem was defects in the manufacturing process. This accounted for 9.7% of fires.
Interestingly, 5.6% of fires were caused when the cars were previously submerged in water.
Finally, 6.9% of fire incidents were linked to arson or criminal damage.
China last year reported 21,000 fires, growing from 14,000 incidents in 2021.

Drivers in Thailand are turning their backs on the EV hype. Sales in April were down further at 18.4% from March
At the same time, sales of EV cars have floundered since they fell in February 2024. Following a 74% fall that month, EV car sales failed to recover in March and April.

Driving luxury cars (ICE and EV) cars in Asia can get to be very expensive. The owners of the car need to pay some kind of luxury car tax on top of the cost of the cars. For example a basic M4 in Canada is about $110,000 canadian before tax. In Hong Kong, a basic M4 cost about 250,000 canadian before tax. I will be crying so bad if my EV got burn down and I live in Asia.

I figured someone would mention the RAM. The Ramcharger is a series hybrid that also provides external charging of the EV battery. It is the ideal EV drivetrain because it endlessly recharges the traction battery without the need for DCFC. It's has a 145-mile EV range and a 690-mile combined range. 600+ horsepower and massive towing and hauling capabilities.

Car-Addicted makes it sound like the series hybrid is a compromised design. I think it is the ideal design. Hopefully Stellantis will move this technology to a light-duty car platform and develop a specifically developed series hybrid ICE that is 20% or even 40% more efficient in heat conversion than current piston engines. I'm hoping the RAM charger finally breaks the series EV hybrid barrier, which is where I thought GM was going to do with the Volt.

I consider the BMW's to be one. If your ICE version has the same power plant as your hybrid, you are missing the point. IMO.
A X5 hybrid should have a small displacement 4 cylinder turbo (BMW has a great one) and a sophisticated enough control system to give you 500hp when you need it and yield a combined fuel economy in the high teens. At least that's what I consider a proper hybrid. Also at the top of my list is a battery that environmentally friendly and reasonably safe.

They are clearly going for efficiency gains. I think I read in an article about this engine that it remains stoichiometric during acceleration or close to, not dumping fuel to cool during acceleration/boost. That's a huge change, a lot has gone into lessening the load on the engine and trying to enhance low speed acceleration. It doesn't look like it'll be much faster, if any, but it does look like it may be significantly more efficient.

But that also appears to come at the cost of an increase in complexity. To be fair, power does too as brands battle it out, but the overall march over increasing engine complexity is not a long term benefit IMO.

I think lifecycle cost to the consumer is the last priority when it comes to automotive design in the view of curing the theoretical anthropogenic globalwarmingclimatechange threat to humankind.

Things that make you go Hmmmm

Vehicles catch fire inside Boston Big Dig ramp approaching Ted Williams Tunnel
The Boston Fire Department shared several photos from inside the tunnel after the blaze, showing severe fire damage to three vehicles.
"They were able to quickly extinguish two of the cars," the fire department said on social media. "The other car was a hybrid which took longer to extinguish."

Will be interesting to see the determination on the cause if it's ever released.

That's what Gen Z and Millennials want. Sadly their buying power is dragging us down the same path. No longer will some pimple faced adolescent ask you if you want fries with that. You will just poke a picture of the fries on a monitor and the fry robot will fill you need for salt and grease.

We are not far from that same dispassionate service at the luxury transportation emporium where a $100,000 car will be one garage door token from a completed delivery. Now I have to get back to chasing the damn neighbor kids off my lawn!

Yes, it is so true. My Tesla friend was in his 30s and he told me it was so cool when he pick up his new car. No paperwork. He open the app on the phone, click a few boxes and the app will show him which slot is his car. No human contact. And he think Tesla customer service was doing an excellent job.

TBH the only thing I'm interested in is a quick walk around car with salesman to make sure looks undamaged and a quick walk through of the controls that can vary between makes/models - spending time with a car salesman otherwise doesn't appeal, especially if I've waited months for it to arrive.

I know there has been an uptick with the concern for EV fires.

I have allotted time today from 3-6 PM to be completely incapacitated by crippling anxiety over EV fires. This may help some of you as it will soak up some of the vibes on here.

It is just my way of giving back to the community.
