The first time anyone ever said "thank you for your service" I was in the US. I was taken aback. It's a little thing, but it actually matters. When I met my wife and she asked me what I did for a living my first response was that I was a garbage man (not really far from the truth some days), but she seemed really nice and I was hoping to not get the blow off that we get a lot in Canada.

On Friday night's episode of "On Patrol Live," they showed a high-speed chase. A deputy got out to deploy stop sticks, parking his car on the right shoulder and running the pull line across the road where he was standing next to a utility pole for cover. The fleeing car swerved to miss the sticks, going off the road...hitting the utility pole...barrel rolling...and striking the deputy. He survived, but they reported that he has a long road to recovery ahead of him.

I remember when they brought out stop sticks, like everything else they were going to be 'the game changer", quickly we learned like much of the new equipment we go they had limited application and in my opinion can be quite dangerous for the officer who has to deploy them.

I hope the deputy makes a full and fast recovery.

I didn't know what a stop stick was until now, the triangular stick has its spikes covered by the shell so its easier to handle and is a handy piece of kit, deploying it has its dangers though.

If you watch the show, every episode seems to have at least one live chase where stop sticks are used to end the pursuit.

Friday's episode also had a live nighttime deployment by a Berkekey County SC deputy on a secondary road. He put the sticks on the far shoulder, and ran the pull rope across the road to behind his patrol car. Before the pursuit arrived, three not-involved cars stopped in the travel lane because the officer was out of his car with the lights flashing. He waved them all through, and got a good stop sticks hit on the car being pursued about 20 seconds later. Unfortunately, the idiot being pursued rear-ended two of the cars that had stopped for the deputy when they were stopped at the traffic light down the road. The victims were all The Citadel college students returning from a social event, and fortunately none were seriously injured.....

Videos like this bother me so much. There’s no affirmative control over that suspect at all. Bad training!

It’s funny how she attempted to career-drop in hopes that it would get her a pass. Nope! ….especially not with these damn cameras attached to us. Good on Orange County for still prosecuting these types of crimes though.

File a complaint for what? I watched the video and I assume your issue was the lane change the officer made. At most a very minor moving violation and likely has a reason that you may not be aware of.

Seriously. Not sure if OP's issue is with the officer changing lanes in front of him, or the Tesla in the second clip. If I were either driver in the right lane, I would have hung back and given the officer room to change lanes. The left lane hoggers were oblivious to him being there.

Thank you for your reply sir. Yes, my issue is: not signaling to move over, not a safe distance to get in front of me, same holds true for when he got back into the left lane. While it may not be a "huge" issue per say in light of that officers daily tasks...I do not find it proper. Nor did he have his lights/siren on or sped away quickly indicating he was enroute to an event. So not sure what other reason he/she might have had for those events to take place.

My concern is with the Officer. Why would you have dropped back...his lights nor siren was on. If that was the case, yes I would have. But other than that fact...the officer shall follow all driving laws...no?

Lights and sirens can and usually are used at the officers discretion. There were numerous times I wouldn't use them. It is possible the officer was trying to close the distance to a car ahead and didn't want to alert that driver to his presence, it is possible he was responding to a call that didn't necessitate lights and sirens, it is possible he was trying to move close to an area as an event was unfolding that didn't require his/her immediate attention but wanted to be close just in case. It is also possible that it was just some sloppy driving (it happens). When I was working if I saw someone make that lane change I likely wouldn't have stopped them, maybe held back to watch to see if there was an issue.

I would have hung back anticipating the officer's move. You can see him coming up on a slower moving vehicle in the left lane and as he closes the gap and starts to speed up, you're closing in on him. I also try to make it a point not to pass a police car.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just stating what I would have done.
