I'm not sure. Did you read biscuits and gravy? Not an English breakfast? Buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy. If you haven't tried it, you should! Yummy!

For sure I will try the b/milk biscuits with tea or coffee, never had them but I'll maybe skip the gravy

On this side of the pond, the items that you call biscuits are called cookies...and I can see why you're repulsed by the thought of putting sausage gravy on cookies!

Our biscuits are sort of like unsweetened scones, or small bread lumps. Smothering them with sawmill or sausage gravy (thickened/creamy) is a breakfast staple in the southeast USA, where some would argue that it contributes to the region's higher rate of cardiac problems.

Biscuits here are also paired with fried chicken for lunch/dinner, and used to make sausage patty or bacon/egg breakfast sandwiches.

I do have biscuits and gravy on occasion when visiting the south, and they are very good in taste...but not very good for my barely-functioning ticker.....

Ahh now I see more, it's an acquired taste to the region of US you mentioned and yes indeed you yourself have to be careful.
When I was on holiday in Miami and visiting the most southerly point in Key West I did not come across any food like that.

Haha, yeah Miami and Florida in general may be located in the South of the US, but their typical diet is different. Lets just say there are a lot of people that eat black beans and rice in Miami.

But there is a reason the Southeastern region of the US happens to have the highest levels of obesity. Too much fried food and gut busting carbs served in ridiculous portions.

I read up on black beans and how they are cooked, if you have them as part of a weight loss diet they can help you lose weight, high in fibre and low in fat they also help to keep your blood/sugar stable.
I've also watched the Man vs Food tv series too and the massive portions served there.

Florida isn't part of the south. It's part of the north, that broke off and wound up south of the south. They also have a strong Caribbean influence in their culture and food.

Biscuits/gravy and hushpuppies are awesome treats when visiting the south, and I have developed an appreciation for collard greens in recent times. I personally do not like grits (like a porridge), and okra has been hit-or-miss for me whenever I order it.

Speaking of collard greens and the south, the southern chef who runs a Main Street soul food takeout shop in a nearby town is back from his business trip today. We'll be having calabash chicken and collard greens for dinner tonight! Calabash is a real niche regional dish from the coastal Carolinas, and he makes it special for us ever since my DW asked if he knew what it was.....

Hushpuppies a sort of deep fried cornbread which goes back to the Civil War where soldiers threw them to their dogs to hush them down, I learn something every day!
Calabash chicken, lightly dusted chicken strips fried crispy and the way it's cooked originates from Calabash, NC. I like the way you name food after the place it was first cooked in that particular way.

Twenty years ago, I did a year as the food critic in a monthly national motorsports magazine. It started out as a one month joke article, and quickly morphed into the most-read column in the magazine every month. Every column was about the regional foods that were offered at various event stops of the national tours, and it brought a virtual taste of being on the tour to drivers who stayed home. The whole tradition behind King Cake in New Orleans Mardi Gras is one example of a column that I did. I learned most of it at the same time!

Ever since then, I always pick to dine at places that we DON'T have at home when traveling. I want to experience the local/regional cuisine, and stopping at a roadside dive buffet is always more interesting than another burger from McDonalds.....

It's good that you find new places to eat out and it's worth going out of your way a little to find some different and special eatery where it's not the norm.
Interesting you mentioned the King Cake of NOla which I read up, a blend of coffee cake and cinnamon roll with fruit fillings and cream cheeses with a small plastic baby inside...
Hope Jane doesn't mind that we're using her breakfast thread for this
