When you feel fine after a 30 mile ride and then hurt your back just lifting your bike onto the hitch rack. Oof.

I remember fall out shelters being advertised for homeowners. They didn't help much if weren't home at the time. If you were at school, we did this:

The dude is wearing a suit and tie. Maybe that was an all day thing back then. And in order to even make use of something like this, you'd need to know someone was about to drop a nuke on you.

Plumbing drains to where? And no toilet? They'd be miserable within hours.

And a hand-cranked air exhaust pump. Who is supplying the electricity for the radio? The power station is a pile of rubble. And so are all the nearby radio towers. So no lights, no radio, no toilet, and a wasteland above. Just shoot me and get it over with.

You guys are just a little older than I am. I’m thankful hiding from the bomb wasn’t part of my childhood. We did however have lots of tornado drills in school in Lubbock, Texas. On May 11th 1970 we had three tornados tear through downtown Lubbock killing 26 people. I slept through it. The tallest building in town was the 20 story Great Plains Life Insurance building and the tornado twisted the entire building. It sat empty for many years afterwards and we called it the Great Plains Pigeon House. The rehab was a fairly massive undertaking because of the structural damage to the twisted steel frame. After it reopened my dad’s company took it over and my dad’s office was on about the fourteenth floor.

To get this post on topic a little bit. You know you’re old if you remember when Ma Bell got split up and regional long distance companies became all the rage. My dad’s longtime coworker and friend in the trucking industry established NTS Communications, which became the dominant long distance company in west Texas and my dad was a vice president. Prior to that my dad’s friend had a small trucking related company called National Transportation Services known as NTS, so to leverage his established corporate credit he named the new long distance company NTS.

I have to add one more little tidbit. I tease my dad, because other than his first job as a teenage sacker at Kroger in Nashville, he has never interviewed for a single job in his entire life. He got his start in the trucking industry when a friend hired him to replace some poor Army reservist who was called to active duty (no job protection back then) and every other job came from one of his trucking coworkers and friends until he retired.

I used Mapsco in Fort Worth/DFW. And I used Rand McNally to drive all across the country, including from Monterey, CA to Portland, ME while I was in the Army. Though not one long road trip.

Is that Celine Dion?!

edit: my first thought was Cher, but I can’t quite recall her ever looking quite so “innocent”. I looked it up.
