Looks like you fellas love your scotch whiskeys. I'm more of a bourbon guy myself.

This week I'm on an E.H. Taylor kick.
Last week was Elmer T. Lee, amazing if you can find it.
Willet, while having a show-piece type bottle, actually has the chops to back it up. A fantastic bourbon.

Any of the cask, barrel, etc. Four Roses is pleasantly smooth, almost buttery. An easy drinker.

Love the old favorites in Blanton's, Basil Hayden, but I've been trying to keep those fresh for when I have company and save the REAL good stuff for myself.

Pound-for-pound one of my favorites in terms of dollar-to-taste ratio is Michter's (reg or small batch). Eagle Rare is also exceedingly affordable and a good one to share with your friends. It's a bit sharper on the tongue though...

I have a bottle of Pappy 10-yr that I've been slowly working through. It's good but the hype machine is full effect with that one. It's not worth the 'used' or 'resale' price, but if you can find it at MSRP (good luck) it's a great grab obviously.

If you ever find bottles of Buffalo Trace's Single Oak Project, pick some up.



I have 4 and each one tastes SUBSTANTIALLY different. Basically over the past four years, Buffalo Trace Distillery has been incrementally releasing 192 different bottlings of the Single Oak Project Bourbon and asking whiskey
enthusiasts to vote on their favorite at www.singleoakproject.com. The ambitious goal of this research was to create the perfect bourbon, based on feedback from bourbon drinkers.

Seven different variables were studied over the course of the project:
  • recipe(wheat or rye)
  • entry proof (105 proof or 125 proof)
  • stave seasoning (six months or 12 months)
  • grain size (tight, average, or coarse grains)
  • warehouse (concrete floor or wooden rick floor)
  • char level (number three or number four char)
  • tree cut (top or bottom half of the tree)

A very cool project with results to show!

Oh, and I also sip tequila from time to time, and my favorite by far is:

I actually prefer Whiskey over Scotch myself. Crown Royal Reserve and Collingwood currently my favorite. Both are blends and both are Canadian. Smooth doesn't do them justice!

Thank you for the cognac recommendations. I enjoyed a bottle of Decourtet VSOP after I read a review saying it was difficult to find and a "diamond in the rough" by an online reviewer. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Collingwood is interesting - I was really pleased with the first glass or two, but I found (IMO) that it seemed to get harsher as I neared the bottom (obviously not in one sitting either).

I'm still working my way through cheaper alternatives to the expensive scotch that I so enjoy (finances are hurting this year, and probably for the next couple of years it is looking like, so just can't justify the expense).

Collingwood is not a bad recommendation - just curious to see whether others noticed any difference or whether it was just me.

btw - Scotch is a whiskey as well. Scotland, Ireland, Canada, America (and others) all make whiskey, it is just where it is produced that typically gives it the forename (along with other defining characteristics).

I've gone thru several bottles of Collingwood and never noticed that.

Yes Scotch is Whisky but has to be produced in Scotland. Just like Bourbon has to be made in the States to receive it's accolade.
The reason I prefer Whisky over Scotch is the "smokiness". There was a time where the smoky flavors of scotch were appealing. But nowadays not so much. I mean, I won't kick J Walker Blue or Mcallan 18 or 24 off of my table. I just won't spend for it. If you have not yet tried Crown Reserve, you guys are missing out. For the price point, it is "exceptional".

Yes, among other characteristics (like the type of grain mixture used and other things), Bourbon needs to be produced in the States to receive its name.

My point is, whiskey is a broad and general term and encompasses Scotland, Ireland, Canadian, American, Japanese, etc offerings. So you can't say you prefer whiskey over Scotch because that doesn't make sense. You may prefer Canadian whiskey over Scotch whiskey - then that is distinctive. Goes to the forename point I was making before.
