The 81mg aspirin regimen is not for pain, it's because aspirin is an anti-platelet, platelets are part of the bodies process of forming blood clots, so an anti-platelet like low dose aspirin is given to slow down clotting time to help protect against vascular blood clots that can cause stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, etc.. All drugs have 'side effects.' Tylenol can be liver toxic, NSAID's can also be toxic to the kidneys, so it's important to follow dosing information on the bottle and get regular check ups with blood labs to see if one is one of the lucky ones who have other, less universal side effects. |

And that’s why I was specifically asking Esteban about how those two medications were for him. I can assure you when I take three aspirin they are not 81mg and I’m not taking them for their anti-platelet properties.

And I have no problems, liver or anything, taking Tylenol twice a day. Not that it does much, but something is better than nothing. |

Naproxen, Ibuprofen and Aspirin are all three NSAID's, they are COX-1 inhibitors and they all reduce the protective coating of the stomach which results in upper GI pain and injury in some people. Esteban's doctor gave him the 81mg for vascular protection, but he's one of the unlucky ones that cannot tolerate NSAID's, he'd likely have the same results with Naproxen and Ibuprofen since they have similar pharmacology and side effects. |

i had a patient who was hospitalized from an overdose of Tums. lol, you have to take an awful lot of them to OD, but one of the primary ingredients in Tums is calcium carbonate. Our hearts use calcium ion exchange as part of the mechanism that causes contraction, heart beats. Too much calcium can affect heart rhythm, cause dysrhythmia. |

If you were in school or joining the military in the early parts of the 70s before the jet injectors were deemed unsafe as they could actually spread diseases and germs from one individual to another.

This is how I got my inoculations when I joined the Army in 1988. I remember them telling us not to flinch or it would rip open our arms.

Yep -- well into the 80's for those injectors for me in the Army as well. I hated those things. In basic training, they had us go through a gauntlet with medics on both sides injecting us at the same time. Then we got to do the Smallpox jabs with nasty pustules for a week afterward even though I'd had that as a child and have the scar to prove it!

This reminds me of another fun fact from the Army. We all got to learn how to self-administer nerve-agent antidote using these fun little things:
You would inject them into your thigh muscle. |

In 1965 or 1966, on one of my trips from college in Texas to my family in the Philippines, I misplaced my shot record (which I later found in my luggage). No problem, we have a little immunization clinic right here in the Travis Air Force Base passenger terminal. I got 3 shots in each arm (needles I think) and a smallpox vaccination to boot. Fun.

The anti-hepatitis shots (gamma globulin?) were the worst. Like 600ccs or some such nonsense right in the butt cheek. Lots of GIs standing up to eat in the mess hall after that shot.

I don't think I ever got that one, but the Yellow Fever shot put me down for two days. My arm was red and hot to the touch and so sore I couldn't move it without severe pain.
